Adelaide, February 14: Australian wicketkeeper Alex Carey on Wednesday (February 14) equalled a record for most catches in a List A innings with his effort during a Marsh One Day Cup match, a domestic tournament organized by Cricket Australia.

In his first 50-over match since being replaced as Australia's first-choice white ball wicketkeeper at the World Cup in India last year, Carey held on to eight catches for South Australia state in a limited-overs win over Queensland in Adelaide.

The 32-year-old took five catches off the bowling of Jordan Buckingham and equaled the List A world record with his eighth catch to dismiss Matt Kuhnemann. Among the victims of his catches were, Ben McDermott, Matt Renshaw and Marnus Labuschagne.

Before Kuhnemann's dismissal, Carey also pouched catches of Jay Clayton, Jack Wildermuth, Dylan McLachlan and Gurinder Sandhu to complete his eight catches.

Before Carey achieved this feat, two other wicketkeepers have taken eight catches in a List A innings, both in England. Derek Taylor set the record playing for Somerset in 1982 and Worcestershire's James Pipe matched it in 2021.

Coming back to the Marsh One Day cup clash, South Australia bundled out Queensland for 218 before chasing down the target with 5 wickets and 5.5 overs to spare. With the bat, Carey contributed 10 off 12 balls opening the batting for South Australia.

While the record for most catches in a List A match is 8, in an ODI, the record stands at 6 catches claimed four times by former Australia stumper Adam Gilchrist. Recently, South Africa's Quniton de Kock equalled the record with six catches against Afgahnistan in the ODI World Cup 2023.

England trio of Alec Stewart, Matt Prior and Jos Buttler as well as South Africa's Mark Boucher, Scotland's Matthew Cross and Pakistan's Sarfaraz Ahmed are some of the other wicketkeepers to have claimed 6 catches in a single ODI innings.
