Babar Azam's Struggles: 'Is It an Ego Issue or Shyness in Seeking Help from Seniors?' Asks Pakistan Legend

Babar Azam, Pakistan's top batter across formats, is experiencing a challenging period. His last international century was against Nepal in the 2023 Asia Cup.

In the ongoing Pakistan Super League, he has been dismissed cheaply twice while captaining Peshawar Zalmi. Former players believe he could benefit from seeking advice to address technical flaws in his batting.

Babar Azam s Struggles Is It an Ego Issue or Shyness in Seeking Help from Seniors Asks Pakistan Legend

Advice from Former Players

Zaheer Abbas, who scored 100 first-class centuries, suggests Babar should consult senior players. "I think either Babar has an ego issue or is too shy to seek advice from his seniors in overcoming his current situation," Zaheer said. He highlighted instances where Pakistani and Indian players sought each other's help during tough times.

Zaheer recalled Younis Khan's conversation with Mohammad Azharuddin in 2016, which led to a double century in England. Similarly, Azharuddin once sought Zaheer's guidance during India's 1989-90 tour of Pakistan. Zaheer advised him to adjust his batting grip, which helped him regain form.

Technical Adjustments Needed

Zaheer believes Babar's current stance at the crease is too closed compared to his earlier open stance. This change gives him less time to adjust to the ball's pace, affecting his shot timing and leading to early dismissals. "I think because of this he is struggling to time his shots and is getting out early," Zaheer added.

Saeed Anwar also benefited from seeking Sunil Gavaskar's advice during his career. Such interactions have historically helped players overcome form slumps by making necessary technical adjustments.

Mental Challenges and Patience

Inzamam-ul-Haq, associated with Peshawar Zalmi, shared insights on mental challenges faced by batters. He recalled contemplating retirement after the 2003 World Cup but was encouraged by Saeed Anwar not to give up. A century in the Multan Test against Bangladesh revitalised his career.

Inzamam noted that when batters face mental blocks, they often play incorrect shots and lose patience quickly. He emphasised the importance of targeting the right bowlers at opportune moments for match-winning performances.

Strategic Approach for Success

Inzamam advised Babar to be patient and strategic in his approach. "Babar, you already have all the cricket shots. But to win more matches, you need to wait for the right bowler and the right moment. Don’t try to hit every ball – be patient and smart," he added.

Babar's current form challenges are not uncommon among top batters. Seeking advice from experienced players and making technical adjustments could help him regain confidence and perform consistently again.
