Babar Azam in splits after Rohit Sharma's 'Kya hai ye' reaction to a journalist question in pre-World Cup event

Babar Azam could not control his laughter after hearing India captain Rohit Sharma's response to a bizarre question from a journalist at the captains' meet ahead of the World Cup 2023.

During the event, a journalist asked for Rohit Sharma's opinion on England winning the 2019 World Cup event against New Zealand on the basis of boundary count.

Notably, a Super Over was held after England and New Zealand scored 241 runs each in the 2019 World Cup final. However, the Super Over also ended in a tie, following which England were declared winners on the basis of boundary counts.

"The Super Over between England and New Zealand also ended in a tie at the 2019 World Cup. But England were declared winners. Both teams could have been declared champions. What do you think should have happened?"

Rohit Sharma, who listened to the journalistic curiously, frowned after the final question was posted to him. He then laughed before stating that it was not his job to take decisions on such matters.

"Kay hai ye? Mera Kaam nahi hai Sir. Ghosit karna mera kaam nahi hai (What is this, man? It's not my job, Sir! It's not my job to declare a winner)," Rohit Sharma said.

The question got Babar Azam, who was sitting next to Jos Buttler, also excited as he immediately looked at the puzzled England captain on his right. Babar ended up laughing as soon as Rohit Sharma shut down the question in his typical question.

Winning World Cup will not be easy: Rohit Sharma

During the same event, Rohit Sharma talked about the expectation of fans to win the home World Cup. He also revealed the reason why India have picked a handful of pacers in their 15-member squad.

“What people are expecting we can’t control. In India wherever we go, be it airports or hotels, they say, 'World Cup jeetna hai sir’ (You have to win the World Cup). It happens everywhere. It will never stop,” the 36-year-old said.

“A team needs to play 11 games to reach the World Cup final. The last time we played this format was in 2019, but to play 11 ODIs in one-and-half months is not easy. It’s a long World Cup. We don’t want any of our pacers to break down. Hence we have selected more of them,” he added.

The World Cup 2023 starts from Thursday, October 5. Defending champions England will take on New Zealand at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad.
