'Babar Azam of India': Fans roast Shubman Gill after India vice-captain gets out for duck on 'no-harm ball' vs BAN

By MyKhel Staff

Shubman Gill was slammed by the fans after he was dismissed for an eight-ball duck in the first session of the first Test in Chennai on Thursday, September 19.

Bangladesh pacers were all over India after electing to bowl first in unlikely pace-friendly overcast conditions at the Chepauk. India captain Rohit Sharma edged a delivery in the slip cordon after surviving an LBW review with the help of the umpire's call.

Shubman Gill walked in at three and the onus was on him to forge a partnership with Yashasvi Jaiswal, and help India fight through the tough first session on Day 1.

However, the India vice-captain got out in a bizarre and unlucky fashion. Hasan Mahmud bowled a delivery which was drifting wide towards leg, but Shubman Gill ended up pushing the 'no-harm ball' straight into the gloves of Bangladesh wicket-keeper Litton Das.

As India were left reeling at 28/2, fans vented their anger at the Punjab batter. "Shubman Gill proves me right everyday that he is Babar Azam of Indian Cricket who is playing in team just because of heavy PR investment and not because of his performance," a fan wrote on X.

"Common Knowledge (Compulsory Tweet) - Ruturaj Gaikwad >>> Shubman Gill," another one wrote. Let's have a look at a few other reactions:

The red soil pitch in Chennai was expected to help the pacers, and for the same reason both the teams picked three pacers in their eleven. Mahmud also picked the wicket of Virat Kohli (6) later to prove Bangladesh's decision to bowl first right. India have also picked three pacers in Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammed Siraj, and Akash Deep.
