Babar Azam receives muted welcome in Pakistan after World Cup 2023 mishap

Pakistan captain Babar Azam had not many enthusiastic fans around him as he reached his home country after the World Cup 2023 campaign.

Pakistan's underwhelming outing in the World Cup had a reflection in the reception for the captain as there were not many at the airport to welcome him. The subdued atmosphere at the airport epitomized Pakistan's disappointing performance in India.

It has been another deja vu for Pakistan, where they shone in patches but in the end, lacked the extra mile to make the cut in the knockout rounds. Despite some high moments, it was mostly a modest campaign ending in a setback amid lofty ambitions.

And Babar's touchdown in Pakistan was a similar one. Some people spotted him and acknowledged, as shouts of 'King, King' were being heard, but it was nothing compared to the craze one expects in a cricket-loving country such as Pakistan.

Babar's captaincy has been dissected across media houses in Pakistan, as ex-players have ripped into him. Also, the Pakistan captain struggled with the bat as well, scoring just 320 runs in the campaign.

Pakistan performance in World Cup 2023

Pakistan had a decent start to the campaign with consecutive wins against Netherlands and Sri Lanka. But a dismal outing against India initiated catastrophe which they couldn't halt as they lost four matches in a row.

Although they won against Bangladesh and New Zealand, it was all but over before their final group stage match England due to a massively inferior net run rate. The final outing against England ended in a defeat as well.
