Pakistan cricket fans were not too pleased with Babar Azam stepping down as the national team captain in all three formats following the ICC World Cup 2023 debacle. Pakistan finished fifth in the tournament and missed out on the semifinal spot on net run rate.
Pakistan Cricket Board (BCB) chairman Zaka Ashraf faced the wrath of the angry Pakistan fans as it was reported in the local media that the PCB top brass was behind the ouster. Babar Azam reportedly wanted to continue as the captain but Ashraf showed no confidence in the captain. We take a look at the fans' reaction on X, formerly Twitter.

Babar announced his decision on social media: "Today, I am stepping down as captain of Pakistan from all formats. It's a difficult decision but I feel this is right time for this call.
"I will continue to represent Pakistan as a player in all three formats. I am here to support the new captain and the team with my experience and dedication. I want to express my sincere thanks to Pakistan Cricket Board for entrusting me with this significant responsibility."
"Reaching the No. 1 spot in white ball formats was a result of collective effort of players, coaches and management. Over the past four years, I have experienced many highs and lows on and off the field but I have wholeheartedly and passionately tried to maintain Pakistan's pride and respect in cricket world."
Babar's team selections drew harsh criticism during ICC World Cup 2023, with many accusing him of forming a coterie with players he liked, such as Imam ul Haq, Mohammed Nawaz, and Shadab Khan, to mention a few. Babar Azam also lost his top spot in the ODI rankings to Shubman Gill during the tournament as he accumulated just 320 runs in 9 matches at an average of 40.
Pakistan will next face Australia in a tough three-Test match away series with Shan Masood all set to become the new captain in the longest format.
