The decision from Babar Azam comes after Pakistan's horrific exit from the World Cup. 2023 from group stages. There were criticism hurled at the Pakistan Captain for their early exit and now Babar has resigned by himself.
He took over the captaincy in 2019 and since then has been an integral part of Pakistan's journey in the last few years. The batter has been a key performer and under his guidance, Pakistan were ranked no. 1 in the ICC ODI rankings.
"Today I am stepping down as captain of Pakistan in all formats. It's a difficult decision, but I feel it is the right time for this call. I will continue to represent Pakistan as a player in all three formats. I'm here to support the new captain and the team with my experience and dedication," a statement from Babar read.
Babar Azam led Pakistan in 43 ODIs, winning 26 matches out of them with a 60.46% win record.
In Tests, Babar led Pakistan in 20 matches, winning 10 out of them and losing six.
Babar's captaincy in the T20 format has been the biggest success for Pakistan as he spearheaded Pakistan in 71 matches, winning 42 out of them. Under his captaincy, Pakistan also reached the final of the 2022 T20 World Cup.
