BAN vs AFG, World Cup 2023: Shakib Al Hasan surpasses Imran Khan and Brett Lee against Afghanistan

Bangladesh captain Shakib Al Hasan reached a unique feat in the World Cup on Saturday (October 7) in their match against Afghanistan.

Bangladesh are playing their first match in the ICC World Cup 2023 against the Afghans in Dharamshala, and their skipper was instrumental with the ball for them. Shakib was one of the main inflictors for Bangladesh as he picked up three wickets.

The Bangladesh all-rounder got rid of Ibrahim Zadran, Rahmat Shah and Najibullah Zadran - three of Afghanistan's top five batters to rattle them. The Afghans were bundled out for a mere 156 runs.

And by picking up those wickets, Shakib now has taken his World Cup wickets tally to 37, comfortbaly the most by a Bangladeshi player in the prestigious event.

Shakib surpasses Imran Khan and others

Not just that, Shakib has also surpassed some stalwart of the games on Saturday. He surpassed former Pakistan captain Imran Khan (34), former Australia and New Zealand bowlers Brett Lee (35) and Daniel Vettori (36) respectively when it comes to wickets in the World Cup.

The 36-year-old Jessore-born has 37 wickets in just 30 World Cup appearances, and is now the third-highest wicket-taking spinner in World Cup. Only Muttiah Muralitharan (68) and Imran Tahir (40) are ahead of him.

Shakib had a fantastic World Cup 2019 where he picked up 11 wickets and scored 606 runs. The way he has started, the Bangladeshi skipper looks set to tumble more records on the way in this edition.
