Sri Lanka win! Charith Asalanka hits the winning boundary and Sri Lanka have defeated Bangladesh by 5 wickets. They've overhauled the target of 165 in 39 overs. Asalanka (62* off 92 balls) and Samarawickrama (54 off 77 deliveries) slammed fine half-centuries and guided their team to win. Sri Lanka didn't have a good start after losing three batters inside 10 overs but Asalanka and Samarawickrama's partnership helped SL revive. This is the 11th straight ODI win for Sri Lanka and the - defending champions in T20 format - have started their journey in the continental competition on a positive note.
Charith Asalanka has also slammed a half-century in the run chase for Sri Lanka and they are on the verge of victory.
Two quick jolts to Sri Lanka from Bangladesh bowlers. First set Sadeera Samarawickrama was stumped for 57 by Mushfiqur Rahim off Mehidy Hasan Miraz's bowling and in the next over Shakib cleaned up Dhananjaya de Silva for 2. Sri Lanka are 5 down for 128 in the run chase of 165 in 31 overs but they should cross the winning line as they need 37 more runs to win and still have 5 wickets in hand.
When he bats at No.4 in ODIs, Sadeera Samarawickrama has an average of 58.6 in 7 innings (including today at 50*). On other positions when he has batted, the right-handed batter has averaged a meagre 19.62 in eight innings in the 50-over format.
Sadeera Samarawickrama and Charith Asalanka have steadied the ship for Sri Lanka with their partnership of 71 runs off 88 balls. Samarawickrama has notched up a fine half-century while Asalanka is also batting pretty well in the 30s. Sri Lanka have gone past the 100-run mark quite comfortably after the loss of top three inside the first powerplay. SL reach 114/3 in 24 overs.
Wicket! Kusal Mendis - who was struggling to rotate the strike - has been clean-bowled by Bangladesh skipper Shakib Al Hasan. This one entered right through the gates and Mendis could do nothing as he departed for 5. Sri Lanka are 43/3 in 9.2 overs.
Sri Lanka are standing at 36/2 after 8 overs in the run chase of 165. Bangladesh captain Shakib Al Hasan has introduced left-arm pacer Mustafizur Rahman into the attack with the hope of breaking the partnership between Sadeera Samarawickrama (14*) and Kusal Mendis (1*).
Wicket! Sri Lanka are two down inside four overs. Pathum Nissanka (14) edges an away-going delivery from Shoriful Islam and pays the price. Mushfiqur Rahim - who is always alert behind the stumps - pouches the ball comfortably. Sri Lanka are 15/2 in 3.3 overs. This is just the start Bangladesh wanted in the defence of a low total.
Bowled Him! A near-perfect full-length delivery from Taskin Ahmed to which Dimuth Karunaratne had no answer. The left-handed batter misses the ball completely and the ball crashes into the stumps. Karunaratne departs for 1 and Sri Lanka are 13/1 in 2.1 overs.
2nd innings! Pathum Nissanka and Dimuth Karunaratne the Sri Lankan openers are in the middle to begin the run chase of 165 for the host team. Taskin Ahmed - the right-arm pacer - is starting the proceeding with the first new ball for Bangladesh.
Bangladesh have suffered a lower-order batting collapse and have been restricted to 164 in 42.4 overs after electing to bat first. Najmul Hossain Shanto - who scored 89 off 122 deliveries - was the only bright spot with the bat for Bangladesh. Matheesha Pathirana - the young Sri Lanka slinger - was the pick of the wickets for his team with 4/32.
Najmul Hossain Shanto's 76* is the highest score by a Bangladeshi batter at No. 3 against Sri Lanka in ODIs. (The previous highest was Md Ashraful's 75 runs at Mirpur in 2010).
Run Out! Oh no... Miscommunication between the batters as both run towards the striker's end. The bowler collects the call at non-striker's end and removes the bails. TV replays showed it was Mehidy Hasan Miraz - who was outside the crease - and he has been ruled run out. Miraz departs for 5 and Bangladesh are 141/6 in 36.3 overs.
Wicket! Matheesha Pathirana bowls a short-pitched delivery to Mushfiqur Rahim and the batter tried to play a ramp shot but failed to connect it very well and Dimuth Karunaratne takes good catch in the deep to end the wicketkeeper-batter's knock. Rahim falls for 13 off 22 and Bangladesh are 127/5 in 32.4 overs.
100 comes up for Bangladesh with a single from Mushfiqur Rahim's bat. The Men in Green and Red will hope for these two stay into the middle for long.
Wicket! Soon after Najmul Hossain Shanto completed his fifty, Bangladesh lost the wicket of Towhid Hridoy for 20 off 41 balls. Sri Lankan skipper Dasun Shanaka appealed for a LBW against Hridoy, the umpire wasn't interested but Shanaka went upstairs to review and ball tracking showed all three reds. Bangladesh - 95/4 in 25 overs.
Najmul Hossain Shanto (42*) and Towhid Hridoy 14* have shared a stand of 43 runs for the fourth wicket. These two are reviving Bangladesh after a troubled start within the first 11 overs. Bangladesh now reach 79 for the loss of three wickets in 21 overs. It has been a sedate start for the Bangla Tigers but this partnership is looking to bring them back on the track.
Big Wicket! A stunning catch behind the stumps by Kusal Mendis diving towards his left. Mendis made a full-stretch dive to catch the ball after Shakib Al Hasan nicked the away going delivery from young Sri Lankan pacer Matheesha Pathirana - the junior Malinga. Shakib falls for 5 and Bangladesh are reeling at 36/3 in 10.4 overs.
Dhananjaya de Silva also strikes in his first over of the match and dismisses Mohammad Naim for 16 of 23 balls. Pathum Nissanka takes the catch as Bangladesh lose their second wicket for 25 in 7.4 overs.
Bangladesh openers out for duck on ODI debut: Nurul Abedin vs PAK, Moratuwa, 1986 | Harunur Rashid vs IND, Chattogram, 1988 | Rafiqul Islam vs SA, Kimberley, 2002 | Tanzid Hasan vs SL, Pallekele, 2023.
Wicket! Maheesh Theekshana is introduced by captain Dasun Shanaka in the second over of the match and the off-spinner makes an immediate impact on his second ball of the match. Debutant Tanzid Hasan has been trapped in front by Theekshana for a duck. He failed to read the carrom-ball from the spinner and paid the price. Bangladesh - 4/1 in 1.2 overs.
1st Innings! Bangladeshi openers Mohammed Naim and Tanzid Hasan are in the middle to start proceedings with the bat. Naim is on strike. Kasun Rajitha will open the attack with the first new ball for Sri Lankan lions.
Javagal Srinath - the former India cricketer - is officiating as the match referee. Srinath has turned 54 years old today.

In Mohammad Naim, Tanzid Hasan, Najmul Hossain Shanto, Towhid Hridoy, Shakib Al Hasan and Mushfiqur Rahim, Bangladesh have a strong batting line up. They will have to ensure that their team posts at least 260-270 on the board to give a decent total to the bowlers to defend.
Sri Lanka have a formidable batting line up despite suffering key injury blows. Pathum Nissanka, Dimuth Karunaratne, Kusal Mendis, Sadeera Samarawickrama, Charith Asalanka, along with all-rounders Dhananjaya de Silva and Dasun Shanaka make Sri Lankans a strong side.
Shakib Al Hasan have called it right and Bangaldesh have opted to bat first against Sri Lanka.

Sri Lanka skipper Dasun Shanaka, after losing the toss, said, "We would have liked to bat first but it is a good toss to lose with rain around. The wicket should also assist us under lights. Even though we have four key players injured, the bases are well covered. Generally, I expect some turn here because there’s a bit of tear in these wickets. Very much excited. We have six batters, two all-rounders and three genuine bowlers. Matheesha Pathirana and Dunith Wellalage are playing."

Sri Lanka are defending champions and chasing their record-equalling seventh title. The hybrid model of the tournament have given them the opportunity to play in their home conditions and they would be looking to capitalise. Bangladesh walk into the competition with the aim of winning their maiden continental title.
Sri Lanka last competed in the ODI format during the ICC Cricket World Cup 2023 Qualifiers in Zimbabwe. They won each of their eight matches in the 10-team event. The island nation defeated the Netherlands by 128 runs in the final.
Bangladesh played a three-match ODI series last month against Afghanistan and faced a humiliating 1-2 defeat amid drama surrounding Tamim Iqbal's shock retirement after the first ODI. After intervention from Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, Tamim came out of retirement just 24 hours after the announcement but stepped down from captaincy and ruled himself out of the Asia Cup 2023 due to injury.
