Bangladesh Cricket Board Optimistic To Renew 'Cricket Diplomacy' As It Awaits India's September Tour

New Delhi, July 21: Bangladesh remains optimistic that India's scheduled white-ball tour in September will go ahead, with the country's government banking on sports diplomacy to restore normal cricketing ties after relations were strained earlier this year.

The diplomatic fallout began after Bangladesh pacer Mustafizur Rahman was withdrawn by Kolkata Knight Riders ahead of the Indian Premier League following BCCI instructions. The incident triggered tensions between the two cricketing nations, eventually leading Bangladesh to pull out of the T20 World Cup, citing security concerns. The developments also forced the postponement of India's white-ball tour, originally slated for August 2025, to September this year.

Bangladesh's State Minister for Youth and Sports, Aminul Haque, expressed confidence that both countries were moving towards resolving the issue through sporting engagement. "The current government is giving utmost importance to sports diplomacy," Aminul was quoted as saying by Cricbuzz. "Since cricket is a place of prestige for us, cricket has a very strong position in our world cricket."

The minister also revealed that communication between the two sides has continued through diplomatic channels. "We have already spoken to the Indian Embassy, they have also spoken to us and they are all waiting for India to come to Bangladesh in September," he said.

Aminul believes the tensions stemmed from "a small incident" and expects bilateral sporting ties to improve in the coming months. "I think we will overcome the tension that was there over a small incident in the past and hopefully our sports diplomacy, our communication, our movement, everything will continue with our neighbouring country," he added.

India's tour is scheduled to feature three One-Day Internationals and three T20 Internationals. Although the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) had earlier confirmed the series window, logistical arrangements remain ongoing. The board floated a media rights tender on July 1, signalling preparations for the series, though the broadcast agreement is yet to be finalised.

The BCB has also indicated its willingness to strengthen security arrangements if required to ensure the smooth conduct of the tour.

Meanwhile, Bangladesh's Sports Ministry has launched two separate inquiries-one to investigate the reasons behind the country's withdrawal from the T20 World Cup and another to examine whether the decision represented a broader diplomatic setback.
With both cricket boards continuing discussions and diplomatic engagement underway, Bangladesh remains hopeful that the September series will mark a fresh chapter in sporting relations between the neighbouring nations.
