Bangladesh Cricket Board Set to Split White-Ball and Red-Ball Captaincy: REPORT

In a major overhaul within their cricket system, the Bangladesh Cricket Board is set to return to its old system of separate captains in white-ball and red-ball. This change in system will see the BCB moving away from the all-format captaincy structure followed by the board.

According to a report by Cricbuzz, quoting BCB sources, the directors will discuss the issue when the proposal will be discussed in front of the board when the proposal is tabled at the scheduled board meeting at the Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium on Wednesday, July 29.

Who Will Be Leading Bangladesh In White Ball?

Litton Das, the wicket-keeper batsman who is the current T20I skipper, is the most-favoured candidate to lead the Tigers in the white-ball. Das is expected to take charge of the ODI team from Mehidy Hasan Miraz, subject to approval of the board directors.

The captaincy change comes after Mehidy's poor run in charge of the ODI side. According to Cricbuzz, the Bangladesh Cricket Board was set to review his position, with a split captaincy model for white-ball and red-ball cricket likely to be approved. In red-ball cricket, Nazmul Hossain Shanto will continue as usual to lead the side in tests.

Meanwhile, Towhid Hridoy, who is currently Litton's deputy in T20Is, is expected to play the same role in ODIs as well. The board is considering Hridoy, the middle-order batter who captained Bangladesh in the recent T20I series against Zimbabwe and Australia, guiding his side to a 2-1 comeback series victory over Zimbabwe after losing the opening match, as a future leadership prospect.

The Bangladesh Cricket Board had initially considered reinstating Najmul Hossain Shanto as the ODI captain after previously relieving him of the role. However, the board is understood to have reversed its stance, deciding instead to appoint separate captains for the white-ball and red-ball formats.

The reported rationale is to allow Shanto to focus exclusively on leading the Test side. At the same time, Litton Das oversees the limited-overs teams and works closely with the white-ball group.

Mehidy's Report Card Ind ODI

Mehidy was appointed Bangladesh's ODI captain on June 12, 2025, replacing Shanto, and the BCB extended his tenure in April this year through to the 2027 ODI World Cup.

However, under Mehidy's leadership, Bangladesh failed to meet expectations in the 50-over format, particularly away from home, as they managed to earn only two wins out of the 13 ODIs that Mehidy led outside the country.

Mehidy's appointment marked the return of three different captains across the three international formats, with Shanto leading in Tests, Mehidy the ODIs and Litton the T20Is.
