Afghanistan duo create history against Bangladesh, break 13-year-long record

Afghanistan are motoring along in the second ODI against Bangladesh on Saturday (July 8).

Batting first, the visitors made a blockbuster start and have continued that as their openers Rahmanullah Gurbaz and Ibrahim Zadran showcased some elite batting displays in Chattogram.

A stellar batting from Gurbaz and Zadran has dismantled the Bangladeshi bowlers and the duo have written their name in the history books of Afghan cricket.

They became the highest-scoring partnership in any wicket for Afghanistan in ODIs, as the pair went past the previous best of 218, which was put up by Mohammad Shahzad and Karim Sadiq for 2nd wicket against Scotland back in 2010.

The record-breaking partnership has seen the pair adding 256 runs for the first wicket.

Gurbaz, the young Afghan batter, who also plays for Kolkata Knight Riders in IPL, scored 145 off just 125 balls before getting out of Shakib Al Hasan's delivery. His partner Zadran has foiled him brilliantly with his unbeaten 79 off just 96 balls.

It has so far been records galore for Afghanistan in the match as Gurbaz and Zadran earlier became the Afghan record holder for the highest partnership in the opening wicket.

Previously, Afghanistan's best-ever opening partnership was against the Netherlands in 2012 when Javed Ahmadi and Karim Sadiq added 141 runs.

The Afghan side are on course to amass a mammoth total in the 2nd ODI, and they will be hoping to defend that to clinch the series. The visitors won the rain-marred first ODI in Dhaka and play the Final ODI on Tuesday (July 11), followed by 2 T20Is in Sylhet.
