Rachin Ravindra, a top-order batter for New Zealand, emphasised the importance of countering the dual threat of Ravichandran Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja in their upcoming series against India.
These seasoned spinners have collectively taken over 800 Test wickets, making them one of the most formidable bowling duos in international cricket today.

Ravindra highlighted the consistency and skill of Ashwin and Jadeja, noting their ability to maintain pressure over long spells. "They've got consistent bowlers who bowl in an area for a long period of time. I mean, you see the two spinners who play consistently, Ashwin and Jadeja, they're two very accomplished bowlers. You know, they can bat too, which makes it a little bit hard," said Ravindra.
The 24-year-old Kiwi player stressed the need for New Zealand to focus on their strategies rather than being overly concerned with India's tactics. He acknowledged India's positive style of play, especially at home, and their evolution in recent years.
"As New Zealanders, we don't necessarily try and look at the opposition too much. We know what a quality side they are and what they bring to the table," he added.
Reflecting on his past experiences in India, Ravindra expressed confidence in his ability to perform well in the Test series. He previously played in India during last year's ODI World Cup and for Chennai Super Kings in IPL 2024. "Although it is different formats, it gives you confidence that you can perform in this part of the world," he noted.
New Zealand's preparation for the series has been challenging, following a 0-2 loss to Sri Lanka and a washed-out Test against Afghanistan. Despite these setbacks, Ravindra believes valuable lessons were learned. "We did some really good stuff during the Sri Lankan series, obviously came on the wrong side of the win and loss column," he said.
In their first Test against Sri Lanka at Galle, Ravindra scored an impressive 92 runs but New Zealand fell short by 63 runs while chasing 275. He emphasised the importance of maintaining focus during critical moments to avoid repeating past mistakes.
Ravindra acknowledged that playing in India presents unique challenges due to spin-friendly conditions similar to those in Sri Lanka. He stressed the need for New Zealand to adapt their game plan accordingly.
"I think we've got to understand that we've got to do it fighting for long periods of time because that's what Test match cricket is about," he explained.
The young batter is eager for the full-fledged series in India, recalling the excitement and passion surrounding previous tournaments like the ODI World Cup and IPL. "As you've seen, those two tournaments ODI WC and IPL were amazing," he remarked.
Overall, Ravindra remains optimistic about New Zealand's chances against India by focusing on executing their game plans effectively and learning from past experiences.
