“We’re Hopeful”: BCB President Tamim Iqbal Pushes for India-Bangladesh Series Amid Tricky Waters

New Delhi, August 31: Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) President Tamim Iqbal seems to be navigating the troubled waters of political tensions that have been going on since 2024 and trying to resume cricket operations that have been in limbo for a long time.

Both India and Bangladesh have a very packed schedule with the WTC schedule and the preparations for the upcoming ODI World Cup, yet the former Bangladeshi international is looking for a window. In a conversation on the YouTube channel 'Not Out Norman', the BCB President said that the three ODI and three T20I match series against India, as originally scheduled, will not go ahead as planned in September due to the Afghanistan series starting from September 13, colliding with the series.

"That it (India series) won't happen hasn't been decided yet," Tamim said. He further said, "Both boards are very sincere that this thing happens. Both BCCI and BCB are looking at windows as well, and at what time what can be done. Roughly a date, around which we are also thinking whether it can be done at this time or not. If I saw the intention was negative, then today I wouldn't even have said this word to you, 'Let's see what happens; we're hopeful.' I wouldn't have even said this word. Intentions are very positive." Tamim said regular discussions are continuing between the two cricket boards, with officials currently working on possible dates for the series.

Changing Dynamics Between BCCI & BCB

The two boards had a strained relationship ahead of the T20 World Cup earlier this year in India, which Bangladesh eventually withdrew from, citing security concerns. The decision came after senior Bangladesh all-rounder Mustafizur Rahman was released from his IPL contract with Kolkata Knight Riders by the BCCI, despite having an existing deal with the franchise, without any clear explanation.

The cricketing tensions were further fuelled by deteriorating diplomatic relations between India and Bangladesh following the ousting of Sheikh Hasina's Awami League government.

Tamim acknowledged that Bangladesh could have handled the situation better and should have participated in the World Cup. Reflecting on the Mustafizur controversy, he said the decision had disappointed people across Bangladesh and was not the right course of action.

However, Tamim stressed that the issue should not have escalated to the point of preventing Bangladesh from competing in a major tournament. He argued that sports should, in certain circumstances, be kept separate from political disputes.

Citing Iran's participation in an event in the United States despite an ongoing conflict between the two countries, Tamim said the situation showed why sporting engagements should continue even amid serious geopolitical tensions. He reiterated that Bangladesh should have focused on negotiations and found a way to participate in the World Cup rather than allowing the dispute to reach a breaking point.
