The Indian cricket team is preparing for a crucial leadership transition as Rohit Sharma, the current ODI and Test captain, approaches the fag end of his career.
According to The Times of India, Rohit has engaged in discussions with the selection committee to outline his future plans, particularly after the 2025 ICC Champions Trophy, where he will continue to lead the side.

With the 2027 ODI World Cup on the horizon, the selectors are eager to initiate a systematic transition in both Test and ODI formats. The team management has reportedly devised preliminary plans but seeks to align them with Rohit to ensure a seamless handover of responsibilities. It is also on the grapevine that he might retire from international cricket after CT.
"He (Rohit) has been told that he needs to decide how he wants to plan his future after the Champions Trophy," a BCCI source was quoted as saying by TOI.
While Rohit's performance in Test cricket has raised concerns, the selectors appear to be more accommodating regarding Virat Kohli's Test form and remain confident in his contributions to the ODI setup. This differentiated approach underscores the selectors' focus on stability while navigating the transition phase.
Potential successors such as Shubman Gill, Rishabh Pant, and Yashasvi Jaiswal are emerging as strong candidates for future leadership roles. Gill, who currently serves as the ODI vice-captain, is considered a frontrunner to take over the full-time captaincy.
Jasprit Bumrah, who has captained the Test team in Rohit's absence, remains a less stable option due to ongoing fitness concerns. While his leadership qualities are acknowledged, the selectors are cautious about relying on him for long Test series or full seasons.
"Bumrah's chances of a long Test series or completing a full season will always be in doubt. The selectors may want a more stable option," a source told TOI.
Following the Champions Trophy, India will embark on a five-match Test series in England in June, marking the start of their next World Test Championship cycle. This series could also serve as a litmus test for new leadership as Indian cricket braces for a new era.
