BCCI discusses names for new captain of Team India in place of Rohit Sharma

By MyKhel Staff

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is reportedly discussing potential candidates to succeed Rohit Sharma as the captain of the Indian cricket team.

ANI reported that while Rohit will continue as captain through the ICC Champions Trophy this year, there are growing conversations within the BCCI about leadership beyond the tournament.

Rohit Sharma and Jasprit Bumrah India captaincy

Jasprit Bumrah is being considered as a potential replacement for Rohit as the team's long-term captain. The BCCI is said to have discussed his leadership potential in the meeting, although Bumrah's injury concerns are still a matter of discussion. Bumrah has captained India in three Tests, winning one and losing two, and his experience as a leader has drawn attention despite his injury history.

Rohit Sharma's tenure as captain has seen both remarkable successes and recent struggles. Under his leadership, India claimed a 10-match winning streak in the 2023 ICC Cricket World Cup at home, though they faltered in the final against Australia.

The team also secured the ICC T20 World Cup in 2024 at Barbados, adding to Rohit's impressive credentials. However, his captaincy has been marred by setbacks, including a 0-3 home series loss to New Zealand and a poor performance in the 2024/25 Test season. Rohit's batting struggles have also been notable, with a series of disappointing scores, leading to his opting out of the final Test in Sydney against Australia.

His leadership has seen a decline since the latter half of 2024, especially in the Test format. India lost six Tests in 2024, including a four-match losing streak at home. Rohit's captaincy record currently stands at 12 wins, 9 losses, and 3 draws in Tests, reflecting a shift in momentum for both him and the team.

The focus is now on the ICC Champions Trophy, set to take place from February 19 to March 9, 2025. The eight-team tournament will be hosted across Pakistan and the UAE, with India's matches taking place in Dubai under a hybrid model. India's campaign will begin on February 20 against Bangladesh, with their most anticipated clash against Pakistan scheduled for February 23.

As India prepares for the Champions Trophy, it remains uncertain whether Rohit will retain his position after the tournament. The BCCI, under pressure to address India's leadership future, will likely make a decision after assessing the performances and the team's needs.
