BCCI Displeased With India Players For Getting In 'IPL Mode Too' Early, Ignoring Ranji Trophy

By MyKhel Staff

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has expressed discontent over certain players' decisions to refrain from participating in the Ranji Trophy, the premier first-class cricket tournament in India.

This dissatisfaction arises amidst efforts by senior players like Cheteshwar Pujara and Ajinkya Rahane working hard to reclaim their spots in the national team by slogging it out in the ongoing domestic red-ball competition.

A recent report from the Times of India sheds light on the BCCI's intention to urge players to prioritise representing their state teams in the Ranji Trophy, provided they are physically fit to do so. Players who are currently recuperating from injuries are expected to undergo rehabilitation at the National Cricket Academy (NCA) in Bengaluru.

A source familiar with the matter revealed, "In the next few days, all the players will be communicated by the BCCI to play for their state team in the Ranji Trophy, as long as they are not on national duty, with only those who are unfit and recovering at the NCA being granted an exemption. The Board isn't too happy with certain players already in IPL mode from January."

The Ishan Kishan Saga

One player singled out for criticism is wicketkeeper-batsman Ishan Kishan. Ishan had taken a break during India's tour of South Africa for mental well-being and has yet to return to the national squad.

Despite suggestions from coach Rahul Dravid to engage in cricketing action, Ishan has been notably absent from the Ranji Trophy, opting instead to train alongside his Indian Premier League (IPL) captain, Hardik Pandya. Ishan plays for Mumbai Indians in the IPL.

The BCCI's discontent is particularly pronounced as some players have seemingly transitioned into "IPL mode" since January, disregarding the ongoing Test series against England. Ishan's absence from Ranji Trophy matches has opened doors for contenders like KS Bharat and Dhruv Jurel to vie for the wicketkeeper-batsman position.

The BCCI's stance underscores the importance of First Class cricket as a stepping stone for players aiming to excel at the highest level. Participation in domestic tournaments like the Ranji Trophy not only fosters skill development but also demonstrates a commitment to the traditional roots of the sport.

One of the main reasons behind BCCI not giving No Objection Certificates (NOCs) to Indian cricketers to participate in the franchise-based T20 leagues in other parts of the world is to prevent the drain of domestic talent for that would dilute the level of competition in the domestic circuit.
