BCCI ignores Tamil activists' threats, Chennai to host IPL-6

New Delhi, March 25: Tamil activists have threatened to disrupt cricket matches in the sixth edition of Indian Premier League (IPL) in Chennai, where Sri Lankan players are likely to play. But, Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) confirmed that matches scheduled in Chennai will not be moved out to any other city.

Tamil activists threat came in the wake of large-scale atrocities being inflicted on Tamils in Sri Lanka, especially during the last days of the conflict in 2009 in the island nation.

The news has brought smile on the faces of cricket fans in Chennai. IPL chairman Rajeev Shukla expressed satisfaction over the the security arrangement in Chennai.

" As of now the matches aren't being moved out of Chennai and we are happy with the situation at present. But we are monitoring the situation. Also, till date we have no news of Sri Lankan players pulling out of the IPL," he said.

Regarding participation of Lankan players in the sixth season, Shukla said: "There is no team from Sri Lanka. There are individual players in few teams. We will see how to deal with it."

But, there are indications that IPL teams may be told not to field Lankan players when playing in Chennai.

SLCPA has written to the Federation of International Cricketers' Association to assess the safety of its players during the tournament.

At least two Buddhist monks came under attack in two separate incidents since Sunday, causing public anger in Colombo.

Around 11 Sri Lankan players including Kumar Sangakkara, Mahela Jayawardene and Lasith Malinga are part of various IPL franchises.

Some of them represent Chennai Super Kings who are based in the state where the recent anti-Sri Lankan attacks have happened.

IPL Schedule 2013 cricket Tournament will start on April 3, 2013. The last match of the tournament will be held on May 26, 2013.
