BCCI insulted Rohit Sharma? Why are Fans angry with India Board and How Shubman Gill is Involved?

By MyKhel Staff

Social media and fans have erupted in anger after a glaring error at the BCCI Naman Awards 2026, where Shubman Gill was mistakenly displayed as the captain of India's ICC Champions Trophy 2025 triumph.

In reality, Rohit Sharma led the team to victory in that tournament, guiding India through a successful campaign that included key wins en route to the title.

The blunder occurred during a graphic presentation highlighting Gill's achievements or contributions. The on-screen text wrongly credited him as the "Champions Trophy 2025 Winning Captain," sparking immediate backlash from Rohit Sharma's loyal fanbase.

BCCI insulted Rohit Sharma?

Many accused the BCCI and the broadcaster of attempting to "rewrite history" and disrespecting Rohit's legacy as a proven leader in white-ball cricket. Comments flooded platforms like X, with phrases such as "Don't rewrite history!" and "This disrespects Rohit Sharma!" trending among outraged supporters.

The controversy intensified as some fans linked it to broader narratives of promoting younger players like Gill, who has been groomed as India's future captain in Tests and ODIs. Gill, a standout performer in 2025, including strong showings in the Champions Trophy itself, was honoured at the awards for his overall excellence, including being named among the top cricketers. However, the error overshadowed these accolades.

The BCCI reportedly deleted related videos or corrected the mistake swiftly, but the damage was done. Rohit loyalists viewed it as yet another instance of institutional favoritism toward emerging stars, while others dismissed it as a simple technical glitch.

Shubman Gill has replaced Rohit Sharma as captain in Tests and ODIs, while Suryakumar Yadav leads the Indian team in T20Is. After the T20 World Cup triumph, India's next international assignment is against Afghanistan in June, just after the conclusion of IPL 2026.

Smriti Mandhana was honoured as the Best International Cricketer (Women) for the fifth time, recognizing her consistent brilliance. The Col. C.K. Nayudu Lifetime Achievement Award went to legends Rahul Dravid, Roger Binny, and Mithali Raj for their remarkable contributions to the sport.

The ceremony also felicitated multiple World Cup-winning Indian teams, including the ICC Men's T20 World Cup 2026 champions under Suryakumar Yadav.
