The BCCI has officially released Jasprit Bumrah from India's squad for the fifth and final Test of the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy, currently underway. Despite the series being on the line, the decision to rest the premier fast bowler was taken as a precaution to manage his workload, with Akash Deep stepping in as his replacement.
Head coach Gautam Gambhir, speaking after the fourth Test at Old Trafford, had confirmed that Bumrah, along with the rest of the pace unit, was fit and available for selection.

However, it was a known plan - agreed upon before the series began - that Bumrah would feature in only three of the five Tests, regardless of the series situation. Both Gambhir and skipper Shubman Gill had backed this approach earlier, citing the importance of long-term fitness and injury prevention.
Assistant coach Ryan ten Doeschate elaborated on the situation after day one of the fifth Test, stating that managing Bumrah's physical condition required careful planning. "It's quite a complex issue around Bumrah," he said. "We obviously want to wheel him in, but we also want to respect where his body's at, and on the basis of that, we just felt that it wasn't worth including him in the squad."
Ten Doeschate added that Bumrah's overall bowling workload, despite playing only three Tests and bowling in just one innings at Manchester, had been significant. "He has bowled a large number of overs, I know it doesn't always seem like that because he's only played three Tests and he only bowled in one innings in Manchester. But if you look at the loads, he's bowled a lot of overs, and like he did say coming into the tour, he was going to be available for three games, and we just felt it was right to honour that call."
Responding to critics who suggested Bumrah was selectively playing matches, ten Doeschate strongly disagreed: "I don't think picking and choosing is a fair comment to Bumrah. He did say he was going to play three games, he left it up to us which three he played."
He also stressed the need to keep non-playing members involved, saying, "We've tried to manage the situation, it's not ideal, I guess giving those guys attention, the guys who aren't playing particularly when you're carrying 18 is important."
