Following Rohit Sharma's retirement from Test cricket on May 7, the Indian team is preparing for a significant leadership transition ahead of the high-stakes five-match Test series against England, starting June 20.
While the current frontrunner to succeed Rohit is young batting prodigy Shubman Gill, a BCCI source has revealed that the selectors did consider bringing back Virat Kohli as captain for the marquee series.

"It is true that selectors did think about having Kohli as India skipper for the England series. This would have given Gill some time to grow into a leadership role, but at 25-and-a-half years of age, he is yet to hit his peak," a source from the BCCI told PTI. "Due to Bumrah's fitness issues, Gill looks like the obvious choice for Ajit Agarkar's committee."
Kohli, India's most successful Test captain, last led the national side in January 2022 during the South Africa tour. While his leadership qualities and experience are not in doubt, the selectors seem to be keen on investing in the future by grooming a younger leader for the new World Test Championship cycle.
Rishabh Pant, who has made a strong return to competitive cricket following a long injury layoff, is expected to be named vice-captain. His presence will bring balance and leadership depth to the team.
Meanwhile, Kohli's own future in Test cricket has come under the spotlight. According to a report by the Indian Express, the 36-year-old has informed the BCCI of his intention to retire from the longest format. "He has made up his mind and has informed the board that he is moving on from Test cricket," the report quoted a source as saying. "The BCCI has urged him to rethink as the crucial England tour is coming up. He is yet to revert on the request."
Kohli made his Test debut in 2011 against the West Indies in Kingston and has since played 123 matches, amassing 9,230 runs at an average of 46.85. His illustrious red-ball career includes 30 centuries and 31 fifties, making him the fourth-highest run scorer for India in Tests.
Should Kohli indeed step away, India will face the England challenge without two of its most experienced players-Rohit and Kohli-marking a new era in Indian Test cricket.
