The Indian cricket team may have to adhere to a new rule in near future as the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) may introduce a novel variable salary structure based on performance.
The new rule was proposed in the most recent BCCI review meeting after India's defeat in the Border Gavaskar Trophy. Captain Rohit Sharma, head coach Gautam Gambhir and chief selector Ajit Agarkar were present at the meeting.

As per a report from Indian Express, BCCI may introduce a variable salary structure - which is like a corporate-style appraisal system. By this structure, a player shall be held accountable for poor performances and that will result in a pay cut in their salary.
India suffered a 3-1 series defeat in Australia and earlier faced a 3-0 whitewash at home against New Zealand, results that eliminated the team from the race for the World Test Championship final. These setbacks prompted the BCCI to evaluate ways to hold players accountable for their performances.
Under the proposed system, players could face pay cuts if their performances fall short of expectations. "It was suggested that players should be held accountable, and if their performances are not up to the mark, they should face variable pay reductions," a source revealed, as quoted by The Indian Express.
While details of how the performance-based pay system will be structured are yet to be finalized, the move indicates a shift towards greater accountability among players. The BCCI is expected to deliberate further on the proposal and announce specifics in the near future. It is likely that the players may have a significant reduction in their match fees as the salary deduction. On the other hand, a more strict demotion system in the central contract may also be introduced for players.
In 2024, BCCI introduced a lucrative incentive system for players to involve themselves more in Test cricket. BCCI announced that a player shall get an incentive of Rs 30 lakh per match if he plays 50 per cent of Test matches since the start of 2022-23 season, which shall rise to Rs 45 lakh incentive per match if a player plays 75 per cent of Test matches.
It is to be seen if the new pay cut system helps to enhance performances or backfires for BCCI. India will play England in a limited overs series up next before the important Champions Trophy assignment.
