BCCI To Sack Gautam Gambhir After Champions Trophy 2025? Report Makes Huge Claim

The Indian cricket team under the leadership of captain Rohit Sharma and head coach Gautam Gambhir during the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25 series have been below-par against Australia.

Despite India's previous successes down under, the team is currently trailing 1-2 in the five-match series, largely due to poor batting performances by the top order.

The ongoing series is the first Australian tour for India under Gambhir's coaching, following his appointment after the 2024 T20 World Cup. There are concerns within the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) about the team's underperformance.

Reports suggest that if the team fail to perform in the fifth Test and the Champions Trophy 2025, Gambhir's position as head coach could be at risk. A senior BCCI official hinted that if the performance doesn't improve, even Gambhir's position wouldn't be safe.

"There is a Test match to be played and then there is Champions Trophy. If the performance doesn't improve, even Gautam Gambhir's position wouldn't be safe," a senior BCCI official told PTI.

Gambhir's relationship with the selection committee is also unclear, and some players feel insecure due to his tendency to experiment with the playing XI. While some experiments, such as the inclusion of Nitish Reddy, have worked well, the handling of Shubman Gill has been controversial.

BCCI secretary Jay Shah's elevation to the ICC chief's position means that the Board will have to wait for a new full-time successor before making any decisions. Former India cricketer Roger Binny, now the president of the BCCI, has not been active in policy decisions.

The former KKR mentor, who is managing his 6th bilateral series, have won so far the T20I series against Sri Lanka and Bangladesh and also a Test series at home against the latter.

If India lose the BGT, then it would be India's third series loss under him. Rohit Sharma-led India will have to win the last Test in Sydney to keep their WTC Final hopes intact.
