Roger Binny to head BCCI Women's Premier League Committee

By MyKhel Staff

The Board of Cricket Control of India (BCCI) on Thursday formed a committee of eight members, which will be headed by BCCI president Roger Binny and aims to develop the Women's Premier League (WPL) in the years to come. Binny is named the chairperson while BCC secretary Jay Shah is the convenor of the committee.

Other members of the committee are Arun Dhumal (IPL chairperson), Rajeev Shukla (BCCI vice-president), Ashish Shelar (BCCI treasurer), Devajit Saikia (BCCI joint secretary), Madhumati Lele and Prabhtej Bhatia.

They will collaborate with stakeholders, players, and fans to create a competitive environment around the WPL. It remains to be seen how much of a key role Roger Binny will play as the chairperson as he has been a mere figurehead of BCCI so far with influential Jay Shah calling all the shots.

The WPL committee may be the first opportunity for Roger Binny, who was a key part of the 1983 World Cup-winning team, to play a bigger role since taking over from Sourav Ganguly last year. The only reason one may expect so as the likes of Jay Shah and Dhumal, another influential member of the board, have bigger fishes to fry, largely the men's cricket.

The announcement comes right ahead of the WPL 2024 Auction, which will be held in Mumbai on December 9 with 30 players going under the hammer. The dates and venues for the second edition of the league are also expected to be announced soon.

The IPL 2024 Auction is scheduled a week after with some records expected to tumble as some of the big names from the Australian cricket team and other nations return to the cash-rich franchise league.
