'Beer trouble' for Team India players as BCCI asks youngsters to 'behave'

Mumbai, July 16: There seems to be "beer trouble" for young Indian cricketers who are gearing up to play in the 4-Test series against the West Indies.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is upset with some of the youngsters in Team India who posed with a beer bottle in St. Nevis and posted that image on social media.

According to a report in "The Hindu", BCCI has asked the cricketers to behave as they were role models to many kids. (Not worried about selection: Rahul)

"Some of the BCCI officials aren't happy with players posting such images on social media. There has been no written communication, but the manager has been asked to send a message to the players to ensure that nothing that could set a bad example should be posted online," the newspaper quoted a BCCI "insider" as saying on Saturday (July 16).

"Many kids blindly follow the star cricketers' actions on and off the field, so our boys have got to always keep that in mind. They should always consider the sense and sensitivities of Indian cricket fans," an unnamed BCCI official was quoted in the report.

The picture in question was that of opening batsman KL Rahul, who was holding a beer in his hand and posed with Stuart Binny and Umesh Yadav. However, the picture has been deleted after BCCI's "advisory" sent through team manager Riyaz Bagwan, the report said.

Rahul has so far impressed with the bat, scoring 2 consecutive half centuries in as many warm-up matches.

On Saturday, BCCI also said that there was "Fine Committee" set up to deal with punctuality and other issues. This is a new initiative after new head coach Anil Kumble took charge.

India-West Indies Test series starts in Antigua on July 21. Currently, they are involved in a three-day practice game against West Indies Cricket Board (WICB) President's XI.

One will be left to wonder whether the cricketers in question will be fined for their beer picture since BCCI has raised objection.
