IPL 2023: Ben Stokes is set to play for Chennai Super Kings (CSK) for the first time on Friday, March 31 as the four-time champions take on defending champions Gujarat Titans (GT) in the tournament opener. However, the playing role of the star England all-rounder is still uncertain.
Stokes, who was acquired by CSK for a whopping Rs 16.25 crore, has found himself in trouble because of his recurring knee injury lately. During England's tour of New Zealand, Stokes bowled only nine overs across. So, will the 31-year-old play only as a specialist batter for CSK?

Ajinkya Rahane, one of Chennai's openers for the IPL 2023 season, was asked the question on the eve of the GT vs CSK match, but he smartly played down the question by saying that MS Dhoni "will use him really well".
"You will see that tomorrow how Mahi bhai uses him. It's completely in Mahi bhai's mind. He will use him really well," Rahane answered.
Earlier, CSK batting coach Michael Hussey had almost confirmed that the New Zealand-born cricketer would not bowl and play as a specialist batter initially.
My understanding is he’s ready to go as a batsman from the start. I know he had his first very light bowl yesterday (Sunday) since he had his injections in his knee,” Hussey had said.
“The physios from Chennai (CSK) and ECB (England and Wales Cricket Board) are working pretty closely together. My understanding is he won’t be bowling at all in the first few games of the tournament... it might be a few weeks,” he had added.
The precautionary measures are being taken for the England Test captain as he is bound to lead the Three Lions in the crucial home Ashes 2023 series which kicks off from June 16 against Australia. England haven't won the prestigious tournament since 2015.
Further, Rahane also opened up on his role at the CSK. The 34-year-old has stated that he has played as an opener throughout his T20 career and would be hoping to deliver when the opportunity arrives. The veteran faces competition from Ruturaj Gaikwad and Devon Conway for the opening spot.
"I have always been an opener. I have always opened the batting in the T20 format, so not much of a difference in my role. Still, whatever the management and captain asks me to do, I am always open to doing it. For me, it's always about the team, so whenever I get an opportunity I will give my best," Rahane told the media.
