Ben Stokes has wasted little time in beginning the next chapter of his cricket career after retirement, signing a lucrative deal with Adelaide Strikers for the 2026-27 Big Bash League season.

The former England captain, who retired from international cricket in June, is reportedly set to earn around AU$500,000 (approximately £264,000) for the campaign. The deal could make Stokes the most expensive player in BBL history, underlining his enduring value in franchise cricket despite stepping away from the international game.

The 35-year-old will be available for the entire BBL season, returning to Australia for his second stint in the competition after previously playing for Melbourne Renegades.

Stokes' one-year deal with Adelaide Strikers is reportedly worth around AU$500,000 (US$360,000), according to reports in Australia.

That figure would put him above the previous highest band of AU$420,000 available under the BBL's platinum draft category.

The timing of the deal is significant. The BBL has returned to a direct-signing model, giving franchises greater freedom over how they allocate their money and allowing clubs to pursue major overseas names directly.

Stokes has emerged as the first major overseas signing under the new structure, with several BBL clubs reportedly interested in securing his services.

The Adelaide Strikers move marks one of Stokes' first major decisions since bringing his international career to an end.

Stokes retired from Test cricket after England's series against New Zealand in June, bringing an end to a remarkable international career that included 114 Tests, 136 ODIs and 43 T20Is.

His decision to step away came after four years as England's Test captain. He has since continued playing domestic cricket for Durham, featuring in the County Championship and Metro Bank One-Day Cup.

The BBL will now offer him a route back into franchise T20 cricket as he begins life beyond England's international set-up.

Why did Ben Stokes choose Adelaide Strikers?

Stokes had interest from several BBL franchises before Adelaide secured his signature.

The Strikers are coached by former Australia captain Tim Paine, who was leading the Australian Test side when Stokes produced his famous Headingley performance against Australia in 2019.

Stokes said the opportunity to return to Australia was one he could not pass up.

"I'm really excited to be joining the Adelaide Strikers for BBL|16," Stokes said. "I've always enjoyed playing in Australia, and when the opportunity came up to join the Strikers it was one I couldn't pass up."

He will also have the chance to play at Adelaide Oval, one of Australia's most recognisable cricket grounds.

Paine described Stokes as a proven match-winner and one of the greatest all-rounders the game has seen, adding that the Strikers were delighted to secure his services.

Ben Stokes returns to T20 cricket

The BBL move will also mark Stokes' return to the T20 format after a lengthy absence.

He has not played a T20 match since the 2024 edition of The Hundred, when he suffered a hamstring injury. He was subsequently ruled out of a planned SA20 campaign after another hamstring problem.

His franchise career has nevertheless included significant success.

Stokes has previously played for three IPL teams, with his most recent appearance coming for Chennai Super Kings in 2023. He was the most expensive overseas player in the IPL in 2017 when Rising Pune Supergiants bought him for INR 14.5 crore.

He was then acquired by CSK for INR 16.25 crore in 2023, although injuries restricted him to just two matches.

His T20 record also includes a defining international moment. Stokes scored an unbeaten 52 against Pakistan in the 2022 T20 World Cup final at the Melbourne Cricket Ground to guide England to the title.

When will Ben Stokes make his Adelaide Strikers debut?

Stokes is expected to make his Adelaide Strikers debut against Sydney Thunder on December 16.

His first home appearance is scheduled for December 23, when the Strikers host the Thunder at Adelaide Oval.

The 2026-27 BBL season begins on December 12 and runs through to January, with the final scheduled for January 26.
