Pat Cummins Emphasises Empowering Leadership and Team Strengths in New Book

Pat Cummins, the captain of Australia's cricket team, emphasises the importance of trusting teammates' abilities. Currently, he is promoting his book after missing the Champions Trophy due to an ankle injury.

Cummins became Australia's 47th Test captain at 28 and has since led the team to significant victories, including the World Cup and World Test Championship, while retaining the Ashes and Border-Gavaskar Trophy.

Cummins, now 31, has taken 503 international wickets, with 294 in Tests. In his book "Tested: The Remarkable Power of Resolve," published by Harper Collins, he interviews 11 global achievers and leaders. When asked about leadership, Cummins said, "The best leaders I've played under always made me feel empowered, brought the best out of myself and made me feel a sense of freedom."

Leadership Insights and Personal Preferences

Cummins believes in leveraging each team member's unique strengths rather than enforcing conformity. Despite having a lucrative contract with IPL's Sunrisers Hyderabad, he prioritises Test cricket. "I love Test cricket so much so it's always been an easy decision to keep that as my number one priority," he stated. He appreciates Australia's strong support for Test cricket.

Cummins admires fellow fast bowlers Jasprit Bumrah from India and Kagiso Rabada from South Africa. "Those two guys Bumrah and Rabada are bowlers I enjoy watching and admire. They have been taking wickets consistently for many years and we've had some wonderful contests," he shared.

Book Themes and Interview Process

In his book, Cummins discusses decision-making in leadership roles across different fields. He began by listing people he admired for their resilience and leadership qualities. Over several months, he interviewed 11 remarkable individuals, including Indian entrepreneur Ronnie Screwvala, former Australian Prime Minister Julia Gillard, and ex-fast bowler Dennis Lillee.

The book delves into how perseverance influences personal and professional paths. A common trait among these figures is their ability to overcome significant challenges, gaining insights and strength. This resilience connects them, offering valuable lessons on leadership and personal growth.
