“He Is Routinely Rested So He Can Recoup”: Bharat Arun Defends India’s Workload Management of Jasprit Bumrah as Fitness Takes Priority

New Delhi, Oct 19: Jasprit Bumrah's workload management is once again in focus as India prepares for their upcoming series against New Zealand, with the team management keen to keep its premier fast bowler fit for crucial assignments. Having dealt with several injury setbacks in recent years, Bumrah remains central to India's plans across formats, making his availability a key consideration.

Bumrah, who claimed four wickets in the final of the ICC Men's T20 World Cup 2026, has been rested for the upcoming five-match T20I series against New Zealand. He will also miss the five-match ODI series against the Black Caps, scheduled from November 4 to 15, before returning for the two-match Test series beginning November 19 in Wellington.

Bharat Arun Defends India s Workload Management of Jasprit Bumrah as Fitness Takes Priority

The decision reflects India's cautious approach towards managing the physical demands on Bumrah, particularly with the upcoming Tests carrying significant importance for the team's chances of qualifying for the World Test Championship (WTC) 2027 final.

In a media roundtable organised by Sony Sports, former Indian cricketer Bharat Arun reflects on Bumrah's workload management and the need to carefully handle his hours.

Bharat Arun backs India's workload management strategy

Former India bowling coach Bharat Arun has defended the team management's handling of Bumrah, arguing that the fast bowler's regular breaks demonstrate that workload management is already in place.

"What makes you say there is no workload management for Bumrah? He is routinely rested so he can recoup," Arun said, stressing the importance of allowing the pace spearhead sufficient time to recover between assignments.

Arun also highlighted the physical demands of Bumrah's bowling action, which requires careful monitoring to reduce the risk of injuries.

"We know the intense physical effort Bumrah puts into his action, making him prone to injuries if overworked," he said.

According to Arun, the management's approach is aimed at keeping Bumrah in peak condition for major tournaments while ensuring India continues to assess other bowling options.

"The management is managing him properly to keep him at top-notch fitness for major events, while concurrently evaluating local and IPL performers to find the best team combination," Arun added.

His comments underline the importance of balancing Bumrah's immediate availability with his long-term value to Indian cricket. Rather than relying on the fast bowler in every bilateral series, India appear focused on ensuring that he is ready for matches where his contribution could prove decisive.

Can India's bowling attack cope without Bumrah and Hardik Pandya?

Bumrah's absence has also sparked debate about the strength of India's bowling attack, particularly when all-rounder Hardik Pandya is unavailable. Both players offer valuable options, with Bumrah leading the pace attack and Pandya providing balance through his ability to contribute with the ball.

Concerns that India's bowling becomes toothless without the duo, however, have been dismissed by Arun.

"Calling the bowlers 'toothless' is unfair," he said, defending the performances of the available bowling resources.

Arun pointed out that India's bowlers had successfully defended a modest total in a recent T20 match, arguing that isolated performances should not determine the overall assessment of the attack.

"Teams are allowed to fail occasionally, especially in T20 cricket where a single brilliant knock by an opposition batter can change everything," he said.

He further emphasised that conceding runs is an inherent part of the shortest format, even for the world's leading bowlers.

"The best bowlers in the world go for runs in this format; I do not subscribe to the 'toothless' theory," Arun added.

New Zealand Tests put the spotlight on Bumrah's return

With the two Tests against New Zealand crucial to India's WTC qualification hopes, Bumrah's return will be particularly significant. His ability to generate pace, movement and sustained pressure makes him a vital component of the team's red-ball plans.

However, India must also ensure that the supporting bowling attack develops the consistency required to compete in his absence.

Ultimately, the challenge is to strike the right balance between resting Bumrah and maintaining a competitive team across formats. If India can manage his workload effectively while developing dependable alternatives, they will be better positioned to protect their premier fast bowler's fitness and maximise his impact when the stakes are highest.
