Bhuvneshwar Kumar's New Zealand Nightmare: How Has Veteran Pacer Fared Since India Comeback?

Bhuvneshwar Kumar's much-awaited return to international cricket has not gone according to plan. After earning his place back in India's T20I setup following an absence of nearly four years, the experienced pacer has struggled to make an impact against New Zealand, with his comeback series turning into a difficult examination.

The 36-year-old last represented India in a T20I in November 2022. His recall came on the back of impressive performances for Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) in the IPL, where he played a significant role in their back-to-back title triumphs in 2025 and 2026.

Bhuvneshwar Kumar s New Zealand Nightmare How Has Veteran Pacer Fared Since India Comeback

Bhuvneshwar picked up 17 wickets in IPL 2025 before taking his tally to 28 in the 2026 edition. His consistency, fitness and ability to swing the new ball made a compelling case for his return. He also acknowledged that his IPL performances played a major role in earning another opportunity to represent India. However, translating that success into international performances has proved difficult.

Bhuvneshwar Kumar's Struggles Against New Zealand

His first proper outing came in Christchurch on October 22, where he conceded 49 runs without taking a wicket in four overs. The second T20I, also in Christchurch on October 24, brought another expensive spell as he gave away 50 runs and picked up just one wicket.

His struggles continued in Wellington on October 27, where he conceded 40 runs without a breakthrough. In his latest outing, the veteran pacer leaked another 41 runs without taking a wicket.

Across four appearances, Bhuvneshwar has conceded 180 runs in 16 overs, picking up just one wicket. His economy rate of 11.25 and bowling average of 180 underline the extent of his struggles.

Economy: 11.25

Wickets: 1

The biggest concern has been his inability to contain aggressive batters once they settle. His experience and ability to swing the new ball remain valuable assets, but he has struggled to find the control and consistency that once made him one of India's most dependable white-ball bowlers.

What Next For Bhuvneshwar Kumar?

With Arshdeep Singh, Mayank Yadav and Prince Yadav competing for places in India's pace attack, Bhuvneshwar faces a difficult challenge to retain his position. It is to be seen if he is picked for the next T20I series, but the veteran may have to crack high numbers again in domestic cricket to find a place back in the T20I side.
