The Big Bash Drafts 2024 is scheduled to take place in Melbourne on Sunday, September 1, when the eight teams from the BBL and WBBL will get the chance to finalize their squads for the upcoming seasons 14 and 10 respectively.
Clubs in both the WBBL and BBL will take turns selecting players across four rounds. Each club must choose at least two overseas players during the draft. One of these picks must be allocated to a pre-draft overseas player signing, matching the salary band of that player's contract.

This year, clubs are not required to pass in the draft and can select up to four players if they wish, provided they stay within the salary cap. Only three international players are allowed on a club's primary list of 18 during the tournament, with one additional player considered an overseas replacement.
On draft day, clubs can pick players who have made themselves available in one of four overseas player salary bands: Platinum (Round 1 or 2), Gold (Round 2 or 3), Silver (Round 3 or 4), or Bronze (Round 4 only).
| Band | WBBL | BBL |
|---|---|---|
| Platinum | $110k | $360k-$420k (based on availability) |
| Gold | $90k | $300k |
| Silver | $65k | $200k |
| Bronze | Up to $40k | Up to $100k |
The salary for BBL's Platinum players varies based on their availability. Players available for the full season earn $420,000. This amount decreases to $400,000 for ten matches, $380,000 for nine matches, and $360,000 for eight matches.
This year, players could nominate themselves for the Platinum round instead of being selected by the league. Most male and female nominees opted for this route.
The 16 players contracted before the drafts under the new multi-year pre-signing mechanism will not appear on the nominations list but must be selected by their club during the draft with a pick that matches their contract's salary band.
A total of almost 600 overseas players from 30 countries have registered for the draft. This includes all major cricketing nations as well as countries like Hong Kong, Uganda, Japan, Greece, Indonesia, and Romania. Specifically, there are 161 players available in the WBBL|10 Draft and 432 men in the BBL|14 Draft pool.
The Hobart Hurricanes will have the first pick in the WBBL after winning a weighted lottery held in June. In contrast, Melbourne Stars will pick first in the BBL for the second consecutive year. The first two rounds follow the lottery order before reversing in round three.
For instance, in the BBL draft, Melbourne Stars will pick first in both rounds one and two but will pick last in round three before picking first again in round four. The rules ensure a fair distribution of talent among clubs while maintaining competitive balance throughout both leagues.
