Billie Jean King Cup Tie Postponed Due to Floods in Malaga

By MyKhel Staff

The opening tie of the Billie Jean King Cup between Spain and Poland has been called off due to severe weather conditions in southern Spain. The match, initially scheduled to begin at 17:00 local time (16:00 GMT) on Wednesday, was postponed after heavy rain caused flooding in Malaga, where the event is being held.

The International Tennis Federation (ITF), which organises the tournament, confirmed that the decision to delay the tie was made following advice from local authorities. In a statement, the ITF emphasised the importance of ensuring the safety of players, staff, and spectators in light of the extreme weather.

"This decision has been made based on guidance from the relevant authorities to ensure the health and safety of all participants and attendees," the ITF said. "We apologise for any inconvenience this may cause and appreciate your understanding and cooperation."

The tie, which was expected to feature Spain's Paula Badosa leading the home nation against Poland, will now take place on Friday at 09:00 GMT. The revised schedule also means that Great Britain's tie against Germany, originally set for Thursday, will now be played on the same day at 16:00 GMT.

The postponement comes just two weeks after flash floods devastated parts of eastern Spain. Several areas, including Malaga, are once again on alert due to the new weather front that brought heavy rains to the region.

Despite the disruption, the Billie Jean King Cup is continuing indoors at the Palacios de Deportes Jose Maria Martin Carpena, a venue designed to minimize weather-related interruptions.

For Spain's Paula Badosa, who was set to lead her nation in the tie against Poland, the recent floods have had a personal impact. In solidarity with those affected by the devastating weather in Valencia, Badosa has generously donated 50% of her recent prize money to the flood victims.

The Billie Jean King Cup is an annual women's team event where the best 12 nations compete for the title of world champions. The final of the competition is scheduled to take place on November 20.
