Border-Gavaskar Trophy: Virat Kohli Applauds Stunning Cover Drive from Yashasvi Jaiswal as India Take Control in Perth Test

By MyKhel Staff

Yashasvi Jaiswal silenced his critics and stole the spotlight during the second innings of the first Border-Gavaskar Trophy Test in Perth. After being dismissed for a duck in the first innings by Mitchell Starc, the young opener redeemed himself in style.

The standout moment came on Day 2 when Jaiswal executed a sublime cover drive off a full-length delivery from Starc, earning a standing ovation from Virat Kohli. The stroke was hailed as a turning point in the innings.

India, bowled out for 150 on Day 1, turned the tables with a stellar bowling performance, skittling Australia for just 104. Jasprit Bumrah led the charge with figures of 5/30, supported by debutant Harshit Rana's 3/48.

Mohammed Siraj chipped in with two wickets as Australia fell short, handing India a slender 46-run lead. In their second innings, India's opening pair of Jaiswal and KL Rahul took control, batting with discipline and flair.

Jaiswal's 42 off 88 balls included five exquisite boundaries, while Rahul added a steady 34 off 70 deliveries. The duo's 84-run stand extended India's lead to 130 by the second session of Day 2, firmly putting the visitors in the driver's seat. Jaiswal's redemption arc didn't go unnoticed.

Cricket legends Sunil Gavaskar and Matthew Hayden praised the youngster for his approach. "Jaiswal batted with intent, much like Matthew Hayden," Gavaskar remarked. Hayden commended Jaiswal's ability to adapt, stating, "This innings reflects his mindset aligning with his immense talent."

The day wasn't without its lighter moments. After smashing Starc for a boundary, Jaiswal appeared to have a verbal exchange with the Australian pacer, showcasing his confidence. Starc, who had sledged India's debutant Harshit Rana earlier, seemed to get a taste of his own medicine.

As India gears up for the final session, they are well-placed to build on their lead. With Jaiswal and Rahul setting the tone, India aims to consolidate their position and take a commanding step in this crucial Test match.
