Border-Gavaskar Trophy: Yashasvi Jaiswal Creates History, Surpasses Gautam Gambhir 16-Year-Old Record

By MyKhel Staff

Young Indian opener Yashasvi Jaiswal etched his name into the history books on Day 2 of the first Test against Australia in Perth. The 22-year-old broke Gautam Gambhir's 16-year-old record for the most runs scored by an Indian left-handed batter in a calendar year, reaching this milestone in just his 15th match.

Gambhir had set the record in 2008, amassing 1,134 runs at a stellar average of 70.67 with six fifties and three centuries. Jaiswal, who has been in sensational form throughout 2024, surpassed this tally by scoring his 1,135th run during India's second innings.

By the end of play, Jaiswal had taken his tally to 1,156 runs at an average of 55.04, including two double hundreds, three centuries, and seven half-centuries. The milestone is yet another feather in Jaiswal's cap in what has been a breakthrough year.

His 2024 run spree began with dominant performances against England, where he scored over 700 runs, including two double centuries. Despite a disappointing first innings in Perth, where he fell for a duck, Jaiswal displayed remarkable composure in the second innings.

His knock of 42 off 88 balls helped India extend their lead to 130 runs by tea. Jaiswal now stands as the second-highest run-getter in Tests in 2024, trailing only England's Joe Root, who has 1,338 runs.

With several innings left in the ongoing series, Jaiswal has a strong chance of overtaking Root and finishing the year as the top scorer. Gambhir, now India's head coach, praised Jaiswal's consistency and maturity.

"Yashasvi's ability to adapt to different conditions and perform under pressure sets him apart," Gambhir commented. Jaiswal's rise has been meteoric since his debut against the West Indies in 2023.

He started his stint by announcing himself with a stunning 171-run innings. In his 15-Test career, the Mumbai batter has amassed 1,445 runs at an average of 55.58, including two double-centuries and eight half-centuries.
