BPL 2025: Chittagong Kings confirm playoff berth with win over bottom finishers Sylhet Strikers, Khawaja Nafay scores half century

By MyKhel Staff

BPL 2025: Chittagong Kings stormed into the playoffs of the Bangladesh Premier League (BPL) 2025 with a dominant 96-run victory over bottom-placed Sylhet Strikers at the Shere Bangla National Stadium, Mirpur, on January 30.

This win takes Chittagong to 14 points from 11 matches, placing them third in the points table. They now have an opportunity to finish second if they beat table-toppers Fortune Barishal on February 1, which would grant them two chances to reach the final.

Opting to bat first, Chittagong Kings posted a formidable 196/8 in their 20 overs, led by an explosive half-century from Khawaja Nafay. Nafay smashed 52 off 30 balls, hammering five sixes to provide his team with an aggressive start. Captain Mohammad Mithun anchored the innings with a steady 52 off 38 balls, while Shamim Hossain contributed a quick-fire 38 from 23 deliveries. Despite losing wickets at regular intervals, late cameos from Khaled Ahmed (25* off 13) ensured Chittagong put up a challenging total.

Sylhet's bowling attack struggled to contain Chittagong's power hitters, with Tanzim Hasan Sakib (3/37) being the only standout performer. Samiullah Shinwari (2/36) and Ruyel Miah (2/42) picked up a couple of wickets each but failed to stop the flow of runs.

In response, Sylhet Strikers never looked comfortable against a fiery Chittagong bowling attack. Shoriful Islam delivered a match-winning spell, taking 4/5 in just 3.2 overs, dismantling Sylhet's batting lineup. Khaled Ahmed also impressed with 4/31, while Rahatul Ferdous chipped in with one wicket.

Sylhet's batting order collapsed under pressure, with Zakir Hasan (19 off 12) and Rony Talukdar (17 off 12) providing brief resistance. Jaker Ali (17 off 23) and Nahidul Islam (14 off 10) tried to stabilize the innings, but wickets kept tumbling as the Strikers were bundled out for just 100 in 15.2 overs.

This crushing defeat confirmed Sylhet's dismal season, finishing at the bottom of the table with just two wins from 12 games. Meanwhile, Chittagong Kings will now shift their focus to their final league match against Fortune Barishal, where a victory could give them a crucial second-place finish.

With a playoff berth secured, Chittagong will aim to carry forward their momentum in the knockout stages, bolstered by Shoriful Islam's sensational bowling and Khawaja Nafay's aggressive batting display.
