CA wants players to be prepared to cut short IPL tour

By Staff

Sydney, Mar 11 (UNI) Australian players who will play in the inaugural Indian Premier League (IPL) might have to cut short their tour as CA may now re-think their preparation for the tour of the West Indies in May.

Cricket Australia (CA) today postponed it's three-Test tour of Pakistan following safety concerns.

But there were reports that the decision was taken so that Australian players such as Ricky Ponting, Mike Hussey and Andrew Symonds can extend their stay in the IPL's first edition.

Cricket Australia chief executive James Sutherland, however, has dismissed any such reports and said the team might require some time to regroup and practice before they leave for the West Indies.

''The IPL is due to commence on April 18 and the Australian team is due to arrive in the West Indies for a tour in early May so there may be a small window of opportunity for players to perhaps play in the IPL,'' Sutherland said.

''But at the same time we have now got this calendar issue where players won't have had much preparation leading into the West Indies tour and so our coaching staff and team management are now considering what the appropriate lead-in is going to be for the team,'' he added.

Australian players might be asked to attend a training camp or play in a series of warm-up matches while the early rounds of the IPL are taking place.

Since the domestic season in Australia is now almost over, players who will not be a part of the IPL will be short of match-practice.

''Really with this decision being made today we need to do a bit more work to work out what the best preparation for the West Indies' tour is going to be,'' he added.
