CAB Joint Secretary Debabrata Das accused of Financial Misconduct, Clubs file Multiple complaints

By MyKhel Staff

Debabrata Das, the Joint Secretary of the Cricket Association of Bengal (CAB), has found himself at the centre of controversy.

A person who was largely blamed for being the reason behind Wriddhiman Saha's departure from Bengal, has been accused of financial misconduct and taking money in false pretences. As per a report from Bengali outlet Janatar Katha, Das has been accused by a many across clubs in Bengal for taking money in exchange of various promises.

Aditya School of Sports file Complaint

In April, Aditya School of Sports formally lodged a complaint against Das with the CAB and also submitted a copy to the association's Ombudsman, calling for a full-scale investigation. As per the complaint, Sachin Dhondge, representing the school, alleged that Debabrata Das accepted ₹4 lakh in exchange for promising to grant the school the status of a CAB-affiliated club. The school believed this would open the door for its students to participate in CAB-sanctioned tournaments and earn formal recognition.

However, over two years have passed without any action from Das, the complaint alleges. According to the school, all communication attempts-calls, messages-were ignored by him, raising serious concerns about breach of trust and abuse of official position. The letter further expressed shock that a respected institution like CAB was dragged into such murky dealings.

Aditya School of Sports has urged CAB President Snehasish Ganguly to initiate a formal probe and recover the ₹4 lakh from Das, stressing the need for disciplinary action and institutional transparency. Despite the gravity of the charges, Das has reportedly continued to function unperturbed, even attending public events like the Bengal Pro T20 League prize distribution ceremony.

Town Club file complaint against Debabrata Das

The controversy intensified further on July 2 when Town Club- a prominent CAB affiliate, submitted a series of damning allegations to the Ombudsman. In a letter signed by Club President B.K. Ghosh, Das is accused of misusing his influence during team selection meetings and accepting large sums of money from players with promises of facilitating their inclusion in Bengal teams. Supporting documents, including records of financial transactions, have also been submitted.

The complaint claims that Das exerted pressure on players like Soumyadeep Mondal and Geet Puri to represent Town Club, luring them with verbal guarantees of future Bengal team selections. It is further alleged that the money promised to these players has not been fully paid and that several others were defrauded with similar false assurances of placements in CAB-approved clubs. Both players and parents have since lodged complaints with supporting evidence.

Another shocking revelation accuses Das of misappropriating CAB resources by allegedly signing off on Town Club players' food bills and routing them through CAB's canteen expenditures. Notably, the allegations are not isolated. Various other people have also written to the CAB President accusing Das of fraud and financial misconduct.
