Adelaide, Dec 13: India captain Virat Kohli today broke a record that had stood since 1968, during the first Test against Australia here at Adealide Oval.
Kohli scored a magnificent career-best 141, 8th in Tests (level with Kapil Dev), on the 5th and final day on Saturday. However, he was let down by his team-mates as India were beaten by 48 runs while chasing 364.
By scoring his second century in the Test, Kohli now holds the record for most runs by a batsman on captaincy debut, erasing a 48-year-old mark.
The right-hander from Delhi finished the match with 256 runs to break Graham Dowling's (New Zealand) mark. The Kiwi had scored 244 runs (239 and 5) in a Test against India in 1968 at Christchurch on his captaincy debut.
Also, Kohli became only the second batsman in history to hit twin centuries on Test captaincy debut. The other being former Australian batsman Greg Chappell (123 and 109 not out) against West Indies at Brisbane in 1975. However, Kohli is the first to do so in an overseas Test.
The 26-year-old Kohli is the 4th Indian to hit two hundreds in a Test after Vijay Hazare (once), Sunil Gavaskar (thrice) and Rahul Dravid (twice). During today's knock, Kohli also completed 2,000 runs in Tests, in 30th match.
