Century in ODI Debut: Amir Jangoo Joins Elusive List, Becomes 2nd West Indies Player to Achieve Feat After Desmond Haynes

By MyKhel Staff

Amir Jangoo on Friday (December 13) joined an elusive list after the West Indies batter scored a century on his ODI debut against Bangladesh at the Warner Park Stadium in Basseterre, Saint Kitts and Nevis.

Jangoo smashed an unbeaten 104 off 83 balls to help West Indies pull of the highest successfull chase - 322 at the venue in Basseterre. By scoring a century in ODI debut, the 27-year-old became just the second West Indies men's player to score a century on his maiden ODI appearance.

The first ODI debut centurion for West Indies in more than 46 years, Jangoo played a key role in the WI vs BAN 3rd ODI as the Caribbean side completed a clean sweep over Bangladesh in the three-match series.

Jangoo joined former great Desmond Haynes as West Indies players to have reached three figures on debut in a men's ODI. Haynes had achieved the feat against Australia in Antigua in February of 1978 when he scored 148 from just 136 deliveries.

Apart from Jangoo and Haynes, there are sixteen other cricketers who are part of the exclusive club with India's KL Rahul, Afghanistan's Rahmanullah Gurbaz and South Africa's Temba Bavuma among the ones to recently achieve the feat. Here is a look at the full list of ODI Debut centurions:

  • Amir Jangoo (West Indies) - 104* off 83 balls vs Bangladesh in Basseterre (2024)

After helping the West Indies chase down Bangladesh's total of 321/5 with more than four overs remaining at Warner Park, Jangoo was quoted as saying by ICC, "It is surreal. It is an amazing feeling and I have put in a lot of hard work and it is finally paying off.

"I just did not want to make a duck on debut. He (Carty) is a close friend of mine, made it easy for me. He told me to enjoy my debut and that is what I did. It was a pretty good wicket.

"Our head coach (Daren Sammy) gave us a clear path on how to score. Every 10 overs, we had our targets. I have had a lot of nineties in my career, just wanted to take in the adrenaline and see ball, hit ball."
