Champions Trophy 2025: BCCI Rejects PCB's Hybrid Model Proposal for Future ICC Events - Report

By MyKhel Staff

New Delhi, Dec 4: The Champions Trophy 2025 has hit a fresh snag as the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has reportedly declined to accept the Pakistan Cricket Board's (PCB) hybrid model proposal.

The PCB's condition was that Pakistan would not play any matches in India during the tournament, citing security concerns.

Champions Trophy 2025 BCCI Rejects PCB s Hybrid Model Proposal - Report

This development comes after the PCB had earlier agreed to a hybrid model, hoping to extend the arrangement for the 2026 T20 World Cup, which India will co-host with Sri Lanka.

However, according to a report by The Telegraph, the BCCI has firmly rejected this demand, stating that there is no credible security threat in India and dismissing any need for a hybrid format.

BCCI's Stance on the Hybrid Model

The BCCI maintains that altering the tournament's structure due to perceived security concerns is unwarranted, as India has successfully hosted numerous international cricket events without incidents. BCCI officials reportedly emphasized that accommodating such demands could set a problematic precedent for future tournaments, particularly as India is set to host several marquee events, including:

  • Women's ODI World Cup 2025
  • T20 World Cup 2026
  • Champions Trophy 2029

Implications for Future Tournaments

The PCB had hoped that a successful compromise for the Champions Trophy 2025 would pave the way for future hybrid model arrangements. However, the BCCI's strong stance has dampened these hopes. The ICC, which had pushed for a hybrid solution to avoid conflicts, now faces a critical challenge in resolving the impasse.

Upcoming ICC Meeting

An emergency ICC board meeting is likely to be held on December 6 to discuss the issue. The previous meeting, held last Friday, was adjourned after the PCB refused to accept the hybrid proposal. The ICC had earlier warned of relocating the Champions Trophy if no agreement was reached, although there is no indication of financial compensation for the PCB should that happen.

With both cricket boards standing firm on their positions, the ICC will need to broker a solution to avoid jeopardising the tournament. Whether the Champions Trophy remains on course or faces further delays now hinges on the outcome of the upcoming negotiations.
