Champions Trophy 2025: Hardik Pandya Could Be India's ODI Captain If Rohit Sharma ‘Opts Out' of ICC Event

The Indian cricketing landscape is buzzing with speculation as Rohit Sharma's captaincy future hangs in the balance, both in Test and ODI formats.

The uncertainty surrounding the Indian skipper, who reportedly "opted out" of the final Test against Australia in Sydney, has opened the door to discussions about leadership changes ahead of key tournaments like the ICC Champions Trophy 2025.

Champions Trophy 2025 Hardik Pandya Could Be India s ODI Captain If Rohit Sharma Opts Out of ICC Event

Rohit's Absence Raises Questions

India's head coach, Gautam Gambhir, added fuel to the fire during the pre-match press conference before the fifth and final Test of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, which Team India are trailing 2-1. Also Read: Shocking! No Arjuna Award for Jasprit Bumrah, no Dronacharya for Rahul Dravid

Gambhir's ambiguous remarks about the playing XI being revealed only at the toss sparked speculation about Rohit's exclusion. Later, reports confirmed that Rohit, the T20 World Cup-winning captain, had 'opted out' of the game, with Jasprit Bumrah stepping in as skipper Down Under. Bumrah raised his stocks as a leader following the team's famous Perth Test victory in the series opener.

This development has led to questions about Rohit's future as India's leader in the ODIs, the only other format he's playing. With the Champions Trophy 2025 on the horizon, there are whispers within the cricketing circles that the BCCI and team management may explore alternative leadership options.

Hardik Pandya: The Front-Runner for ODI Captaincy?

If Rohit's role as ODI captain comes under scrutiny, Hardik Pandya emerges as the strongest contender to take over. Known for his natural leadership abilities, Hardik has already proven his mettle as acting India captain, leading from the front and managing both senior players and youngsters with ease. Sources close to the BCCI have hinted that Hardik could be considered for the ODI captaincy if the board decides to ease Rohit's burden. "Hardik has the knack for leading in high-pressure situations, and his experience as an all-rounder and leader makes him an ideal choice for an ICC tournament like the Champions Trophy," a source told MyKhel.

Other Candidates in the Mix

While young Shubman Gill was named vice-captain during India's recent tour of Sri Lanka, his patchy form and lack of experience may work against him as an immediate captaincy candidate. Also Read: Rohit Sharma to miss Sydney Test? Has an Indian Captain Ever Been Dropped Midway Through a Series?

Similarly, Suryakumar Yadav (SKY), despite his success in T20Is, has struggled to cement his place in the ODI setup, making him a less viable option for now. Rishabh Pant - another potential candidate - has been struggling with consistency. Also Read: Exclusive | Gambhir has not been in control: Surinder Khanna

"Gill needs more grooming to mature into a leader, and SKY's ODI performances haven't been convincing enough. Hardik remains the most balanced option to lead India in ODIs if Rohit is unavailable," the source added.

It is worth noticing that Rohit and the newly appointed chairman of selectors Ajit Agarkar had in August last year reportedly threatened to resign if Hardik - the vice-captain of the T20 World Cup-winning Indian side - was appointed captain of the T20I side.

The Road to Champions Trophy 2025

The Champions Trophy, set to be held in a hybrid model with India playing their matches outside Pakistan, is a crucial tournament for the Men in Blue to stamp their authority in the 50-over format, especially after ODI WC Final loss at home in 2023. With Rohit's captaincy under the scanner and the team management likely to explore contingency plans, Hardik's appointment as ODI skipper could signal a new era for Indian cricket.

Whether Rohit Sharma will continue as India's ODI captain or step aside remains to be seen. What's certain, however, is that India will need strong, adaptable leadership to navigate the challenges of the Champions Trophy, where the top eight teams in the world will fight for the coveted trophy. In Hardik Pandya, the team may have the perfect leader for the job!
