Later, reports confirmed that Rohit, the T20 World Cup-winning captain, had 'opted out' of the game, with Jasprit Bumrah stepping in as skipper Down Under. Bumrah raised his stocks as a leader following the team's famous Perth Test victory in the series opener.

This development has led to questions about Rohit's future as India's leader in the ODIs, the only other format he's playing. Other Candidates in the Mix

"Gill needs more grooming to mature into a leader, and SKY's ODI performances haven't been convincing enough. Hardik remains the most balanced option to lead India in ODIs if Rohit is unavailable," the source added.

It is worth noticing that Rohit and the newly appointed chairman of selectors Ajit Agarkar had in August last year reportedly threatened to resign if Hardik - the vice-captain of the T20 World Cup-winning Indian side - was appointed captain of the T20I side.
