Pakistan's security forces have been placed on high alert following intelligence reports warning of a potential terrorist attack during the ICC Champions Trophy.

This security threat presents a major challenge for the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB), which has been working to re-establish the country as a safe venue for international cricket. After the 2009 attack on the Sri Lankan cricket team, Pakistan went over a decade without hosting major international matches.

As per a CNN-News18 report, the country's Intelligence Bureau has issued a security advisory, cautioning that extremist groups like Tehrik-e Taliban Pakistan (TTP), ISIS, and various Balochistan-based outfits may target foreign guests attending the tournament.

However, in recent years, international teams have returned, and the Champions Trophy marks the first ICC event held in the country in 26 years. With the latest security concerns, Pakistan's ability to host high-profile tournaments could come under scrutiny once again.

India had already expressed concerns about security and opted not to travel to Pakistan for the tournament. As a result, a hybrid model was introduced, with India playing its matches in Dubai. In light of the intelligence warnings, Pakistani authorities have further bolstered security around stadiums, team hotels, and other key locations.

On the cricketing front, Pakistan's hopes in the Champions Trophy are hanging by a thread. They suffered a 60-run defeat to New Zealand in their opening match, followed by a six-wicket loss to India. These setbacks have put their semifinal qualification in serious jeopardy.

For Pakistan to advance, they must secure a decisive win against Bangladesh while hoping that both India and Bangladesh defeat New Zealand. Additionally, Pakistan must ensure that their victory margin and New Zealand's losses are significant enough to improve their net run rate above both teams. However, if New Zealand wins against Bangladesh on Monday, Pakistan will be officially eliminated from the tournament.

With mounting security challenges and a dwindling tournament campaign, Pakistan faces a crucial period both on and off the field in the ICC Champions Trophy.
