Champions Trophy 2025: India 'need backup pacer' in Dubai, four spinners not viable in Dubai, says Irfan Pathan

By MyKhel Staff

Former Indian all-rounder Irfan Pathan has raised concerns over India's squad composition for the upcoming Champions Trophy 2025, particularly the absence of a backup pace bowler.

Speaking at a promotional event, Pathan emphasised the challenges of relying on four spinners in Dubai's conditions, stating that Mohammed Siraj could have been a vital inclusion.

"You need a backup pacer in Dubai. Playing four spinners won't work there. With Bumrah and Shami both returning from injuries, it's not going to be easy for them straight away," he was quoted as saying by TOI. Irfan pointed out Siraj's ability to adapt and deliver in pressure situations, calling him a missed opportunity for the squad.

While expressing hope in the current squad, Pathan urged fans and selectors to back the chosen players. "A pacer like Siraj could have filled the gap. That said, the selectors' choices deserve our full support. Let's hope they perform well," he added.

Pathan also discussed the recent dip in form of senior batters Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli, who struggled in the Test series loss against Australia. He assured fans that the duo's white-ball capabilities remain intact.

"Rohit and Virat are proven champions in ODIs and T20Is. Test cricket requires different adjustments, but in ODIs, they'll bounce back strongly. It's their favourite format, and there's no doubt they'll deliver," Pathan explained.

Reflecting on India's fighting spirit, Pathan shared a memory from the 2003-04 Australia tour, recalling how the team overcame internal and external doubts to draw the series. "Back then, outsiders thought our team was fractured, but we showed unity on the field. Indian cricket is always above individual issues," he asserted.

Pathan also emphasised the significance of domestic cricket, urging players to participate consistently. "Playing domestic matches regularly, not just a few to make an appearance, is crucial. It's beneficial for both players and Indian cricket. Young bowlers gain confidence bowling to stars like Kohli and Rohit, which raises their performance levels," he said.

Lastly, Pathan supported the Indian team management's cautious approach with Mohammed Shami's return from injury. "Shami knows his body well and provides honest feedback to the management. Recovery takes time, and decisions must be made wisely," he remarked.
