The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is reportedly set to delay the announcement of India's provisional squad for the ICC Champions Trophy 2025.
According to Cricbuzz, the International Cricket Council (ICC) guidelines require squads to be submitted at least a month before the tournament but this year's deadline has been advanced to five weeks prior.

The Ajit Agarkar-led selection panel was expected to name the squad by January 12, but logistical constraints may push the announcement closer to January 18-19. The Champions Trophy, which begins on February 19 in Pakistan and the UAE, will see India finalise their roster largely based on performances in the upcoming ODI series against England. However, commitments in Australia for a Test series have reportedly stretched resources, prompting the BCCI to seek additional time from the ICC to finalize their selections.
In the meantime, the T20 squad for the five-match series against England is expected to be revealed imminently. Unlike the ODI squad, this T20 lineup will see continuity from the players who featured in October's series against Bangladesh. Veterans like Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammed Siraj, who were rested during the Bangladesh games, are unlikely to make a return for this series as the focus remains on grooming young talent and managing workloads.
This delay is not without precedent, as global tournaments often bring about adjustments in schedules and plans for participating teams. With the ICC allowing changes to the provisional squad before the final submission, India appears to be leveraging this flexibility. The ODI series against England will serve as a final litmus test for players vying for a spot in the Champions Trophy squad, ensuring that the team heads into the tournament with a well-rounded and in-form unit.
The T20 series against England, on the other hand, offers an opportunity for emerging players to make their mark ahead of a packed cricket calendar. As the cricketing world gears up for the Champions Trophy, fans and analysts alike will be keenly observing how the BCCI strategizes its selections to balance preparation and performance across formats.
