Champions Trophy 2025: Jasprit Bumrah can be out for six months to one year, suggest experts

Champions Trophy 2025: The cat is out of the bag. Rather, what should not have been kept as a secret is now out in the open, Jasprit Bumrah's back injury is indeed serious.

The BCCI, in its typical ruthless style, did not bother to share the medical updates. MyKhel had repeatedly written, that Bumrah's back injury was more than just a back spasm.

Champions Trophy 2025 Jasprit Bumrah

Nobody shared the details of the report. It was kept a secret. Now, all one knows is that Jasprit Bumrah will be on bed rest and then go to the NCA or Centre for Excellence in Bengaluru for rehab.

Adding a new layer to the ongoing saga, Bumrah recently responded on social media to the injury reports. He tweeted: "I know fake news is easy to spread but this made me laugh. Sources unreliable ." While Bumrah dismissed the speculation, MyKhel stands by its report, which is based on insights from medical experts, especially in light of the lack of clarity from official sources.

Hang on, what is the injury? The website spoke to some experts in strength and conditioning, who discussed the case but did not want their identity to be revealed. "Is it a herniated disc, a disc bulge, a stress fracture or a slip disc, nobody knows. Bed rest means it is serious. Surely, the NCA is not the place for rehab. I am sure there are top hospitals in Mumbai which can decide what will be the course of treatment," said the specialist. And then, there was this nasty comment: "The NCA is incapable of handling all this. It's a joke out there."

Surely, Bumrah's wife would have taken multiple opinions on her husband, the first being from the ortho surgeon in Christchurch, New Zealand, who operated on his back in March 2024 for a stress fracture. Imagine, in nine months, Jasprit Bumrah's back is again under trauma and we will not be given the true picture.

Worse, for all those who speculated that BOOM will be back for the Champions Trophy, that is nonsense. "Bumrah could be out for six months to one year if the injury is so serious. It is sad he has been managed so poorly and been pushed so hard. The breakdown did not happen in one day. There would have been indications," said another ortho expert who has dealt with cricketers. Given the sensitive nature, the doctors, physios and allied staff myKhel spoke to do not want to say more. "The MRI report would have said everything," is the takeaway.

A couple of points, who was managing Bumrah's workload. This coaching set up under Gautam Gambhir is useless. They are incapable of understanding workload management. "India has had fast bowlers like Ishant Sharma, Zaheer Khan, Ashish Nehra and so many more. At that time, the right people were managing these stars. Something is wrong, Bumrah has been pushed too hard. His injury flareup is a recurrence and that's so dangerous," said a strength and conditioning expert who has worked with the Indian team before.

Someone like Lakshmipathy Balaji, who had a back stress fracture, was asked to modify his action and he returned. The corrections in his action was done helped Balaji return as a fitter bowler and the TNCA did all the hard work.

In the case of Jasprit Bumrah, it is one blind man trying to guide the other. For selfish reasons, Bumrah has been over-bowled, across formats. If people still speculate he will be back for IPL 2025, that's worse. So, when will the MRI details come out on Bumrah's back? That will be most important as bed rest is serious stuff. It is much more than a spasm. Why this suspense from the BCCI begs an answer.
