Champions Trophy 2025: Players Missing Out with Injuries

Australia

Australia faces significant challenges with the loss of multiple pivotal players. A number of players are missing the tournament, which has significantly reduced their artillery.

Pat Cummins: The Australian captain and leading fast bowler has been ruled out due to an ankle injury. His leadership and bowling prowess will be sorely missed.

Josh Hazlewood: A mainstay in Australia's bowling lineup, Hazlewood is sidelined with a hip problem, further depleting the team's pace attack.

Mitchell Starc: The experienced left-arm pacer has withdrawn from the tournament, citing personal reasons. His ability to deliver crucial breakthroughs, especially with the new ball, will be a significant loss for the team.

Mitchell Marsh: The dynamic all-rounder is out due to a back injury. Marsh's dual ability to contribute with both bat and ball provided balance to the Australian side.

Marcus Stoinis: In a surprising development, Stoinis announced his retirement from ODI cricket just days before the tournament, leaving a void in the middle order and as a part-time bowler.

In response to these setbacks, Australia has made several squad adjustments. Steve Smith has been appointed as the captain. The team has included Sean Abbott, Ben Dwarshuis, Jake Fraser-McGurk, Spencer Johnson, and Tanveer Sangha as replacements.

India

India's campaign has been dealt a blow with the absence of their star man with the ball.

Jasprit Bumrah: The premier fast bowler is ruled out due to a back injury. Bumrah's unique bowling action and ability to deliver in crucial moments have been pivotal for India.

His absence raises concerns about India's bowling strength in the tournament.
To mitigate this loss, India has added Varun Chakravarthy to their squad, aiming to bolster their spin department. Virat Kohli also had a knee swelling recently but the India stalwart has returned to full fitness.

South Africa

Anrich Nortje: The fast bowler is sidelined with a back injury. Nortje's express pace has been a vital component of South Africa's bowling attack. His injury necessitated the inclusion of Corbin Bosch as his replacement.

Gerald Coetzee: South Africa all-rounder Gerald Coetzee, who was star in the 2023 World Cup, is set to miss the tournament as he nurses a groin injury.

England

Jacob Bethell: The all-rounder has withdrawn from the squad after sustaining a hamstring injury. His absence led to the inclusion of Tom Banton as a replacement.

Ben Duckett: The English batter is also struggling with a groin issue but is expected to feature in the Champions Trophy.

Additionally, England's head coach, Brendon McCullum, has defended the team's training regimen amidst criticism, especially after a series loss to India.

Pakistan

Saim Ayub: The promising opener is ruled out due to an ankle injury. His aggressive batting at the top order was expected to provide Pakistan with strong starts.

Afghanistan

Allah Ghazanfar: The young mystery spinner is out due to a fractured vertebra sustained during a tour to Zimbabwe in December. His partnership with Rashid Khan was anticipated to be a cornerstone of Afghanistan's bowling strategy.

Mujeeb Ur Rahman: Mujeeb Ur Rahman suffered a sprain in his index finger and is set to miss the Champions Trophy.

These significant absences across multiple teams are expected to reshape the dynamics of the 2025 ICC Champions Trophy. Although these are big blows to the respective nations, but it has opened up opportunity for others who may stamp their authority in the coveted competition.
