Champions Trophy 2025: Learn why PCB were handed deadline extension by ICC?

By MyKhel Staff

The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has received a crucial deadline extension from the International Cricket Council (ICC) regarding the venue handover for the 2025 ICC Champions Trophy.

This rare exception allows Pakistan to conduct a tri-series just before the marquee tournament, providing them with an opportunity to test venues that are still undergoing renovations.

ICC Grants Special Consideration to PCB

Typically, the ICC mandates an "exclusivity period" before major global tournaments, during which host venues come under the sole control of the governing body. However, citing the PCB's ongoing preparations and logistical challenges, the ICC has permitted Pakistan to use the Lahore and Karachi venues beyond the usual deadline. According to Times of India, this deviation from standard protocol enables the PCB to evaluate pitch conditions and operational aspects before the Champions Trophy begins.

Pakistan will host a tri-series featuring South Africa and New Zealand, starting February 8, 2025. This series, originally planned for Multan, was shifted to Lahore and Karachi to ensure these venues are match-ready for the eight-team tournament. The ICC will officially take control of the stadiums only after the tri-series concludes.

A similar exception has been granted for the Dubai International Stadium, which will host all of India's matches, including possible knockout games. The venue remains in use until February 10 for the ILT20 tournament, after which it will be exclusively prepared for the Champions Trophy.

An ICC official confirmed the decision, stating, "Hosts may seek approval from ICC for activities to take place in venues within the exclusivity window. PCB has followed the process, and the ICC has authorized this for the testing of venues. Similarly, Dubai Stadium is also being used during the exclusivity period for the ILT20."

With the Champions Trophy fast approaching, the PCB is working against tight deadlines to ensure Lahore, Karachi, and Rawalpindi are in optimal condition. While concerns remain over the completion of renovations, the extended deadline provides breathing room to make final adjustments.

As Pakistan prepares to welcome top cricketing nations for the tournament, the ICC's flexibility could prove pivotal in ensuring a smooth execution of the event. The coming weeks will be critical in determining whether the PCB can meet expectations and deliver a tournament-ready infrastructure.
