Champions Trophy 2025: Major INJURY blow for South Africa, express pacer ruled out of tournament

By MyKhel Staff

Champions Trophy 2025: South Africa's Champions Trophy campaign has suffered a major setback with the withdrawal of express pacer Anrich Nortje due to a back injury.

Cricket South Africa (CSA) confirmed the news on Wednesday, revealing that the injury will not only sideline him from the marquee tournament but also from the remainder of the SA20 league.

Nortje's fitness concerns have been a recurring issue throughout his career, and this latest injury adds to his woes. After undergoing scans earlier this week, it was determined that his recovery timeline would not align with the Champions Trophy schedule. The news comes just days after Nortje's inclusion in the South African squad was seen as a key boost to their bowling attack, set to face Afghanistan in their opening match on February 21 in Karachi.

The 30-year-old pacer has struggled with injuries over the years, limiting his appearances on the international stage. Nortje last featured for South Africa in June 2024, and his most recent competitive outing came in the Abu Dhabi T10 on December 2. A toe injury sustained during a training session in the lead-up to South Africa's white-ball series against Pakistan further delayed his return.

Despite his injury-prone history, Nortje remains one of the fastest bowlers in the game, capable of delivering match-defining spells. However, his absence from major tournaments has been a persistent theme. He missed the 2019 ODI World Cup with a broken thumb and sat out the 2023 edition due to a suspected stress fracture.

Gerald Coetzee is widely tipped to replace Nortje in the Champions Trophy squad. The 23-year-old fast bowler impressed in the 2023 World Cup, and coach Rob Walter has expressed confidence in his abilities. While Nortje's experience would have been invaluable, Coetzee's raw pace and recent form offer South Africa a promising alternative.

Nortje's unavailability also raises questions about his participation in the upcoming IPL season with Kolkata Knight Riders. With limited time to recover, his prospects for the tournament remain uncertain.

For South Africa, losing a player of Nortje's calibre is a significant setback as they aim to make an impact in the Champions Trophy. The team will now look to rally behind their remaining pacers to spearhead their campaign in Pakistan.
