Champions Trophy 2025: Ex ENG Star Slams 'Arrogant' England, Explains Why People 'Love' Seeing Them Lose

By MyKhel Staff

Champions Trophy 2025: Mark Butcher has strongly criticized the Jos Buttler-led England side, stating that their perceived arrogance has made them a team that fans enjoy watching lose. Butcher's remarks came in the wake of England's disappointing group-stage exit from the 2025 ICC Champions Trophy, where they suffered defeats against Australia and Afghanistan.

England's approach to 50-over cricket has come under scrutiny, particularly as they played just 14 ODIs between the 2023 World Cup and the Champions Trophy, winning only four.

Their preparation for the tournament included a 3-0 series loss in India, during which opener Ben Duckett dismissed the significance of bilateral defeats, stating that the team's primary focus was on the Champions Trophy.

"What I will say is this, I completely and utterly understand why everybody loves seeing England lose," Butcher said on the Wisden podcast. "And the reason for this is this, and I've probably said this before long, long time back - the arrogance of English cricket to decide that after you strive for all that time to win a 50-over World Cup, and then within the next breath, you decide that it's not important enough for your players to play."

England's humiliating loss to Afghanistan by eight runs at the Gaddafi Stadium in Lahore further fueled criticism. The stadium was packed with Afghan supporters, but even neutral spectators were seen backing the opposition against England.

"The arrogance in that and the comeuppance that has come around... there's no wonder ... the crowd there all supporting Afghanistan, whether they're from Afghanistan or Pakistan, or wherever they are," Butcher added.

The former batter had previously expressed concerns about England's lack of ODI experience, arguing that most of the current squad was unfamiliar with the nuances and tempo of the 50-over format.

"The very thought that you, that you think that you can, you're good enough, basically, to decide that one format isn't worth your time, but yet you still feel as though you're sort of up there and deserving of winning these major trophies. It is part of the reason why people can't stand us ... You go there in all of these competitions with very high hopes of winning and putting your best performance in and doing yourself and your country proud: what right do we have to think that you're going to be good enough to win a 50-over competition?" he remarked.

Butcher is not alone in his criticism. During England's series against India, former cricketer Kevin Pietersen made similar observations, while ex-England spinner Alex Hartley also echoed these sentiments in recent discussions. The backlash highlights growing concerns over England's commitment to ODI cricket and their approach to major ICC events.
