Champions Trophy 2025: Pakistan's dream turning into a Nightmare - Do they even deserve it?

As the world waits eagerly a couple of months before the ICC Champions Trophy 2025, the possible destination of the tournament still hovering with a huge question mark.

India and Pakistan, two powerhouses of World cricket are at odds and the flagship tournament is in doubt as they are at loggerheads, continuously probing to stamp their authority and swing the pendulum in their favour.

Champions Trophy 2025

The Champions Trophy, a prestigious ICC tournament, has been a crown jewel in international cricket since its inception in 1998. Pakistan, the 2017 champions, has been particularly vocal about ensuring their right to host the 2025 edition.

However, this ambition has met with significant obstacles, not least from neighbouring India. The geopolitical tensions between the two nations, and security concerns, have turned Pakistan's bid into a contentious issue.

In the past few months, Pakistani players, media and ex-players have cordially invited India to play in their country. Pakistan was largely hopeful that India might respond positively to their gracious invitation, but the sugarcoating has turned sour as BCCI has rebuffed strongly, confirming their unanimous decision to not cross the Western border. And that is the apple of discord. Although BCCI has communicated with ICC about their decision, PCB is not ready to accept that and has started to release their word bombs, which range from criticizing India on the TV panel to threatening to walk out from the Champions Trophy.

India's firm stance of not travelling to Pakistan has heightened the tension further, and Pakistan is not ready to bend its spine to their neighbours and accept the proposal of a hybrid model, which was adopted during the Asia Cup last year.

Why is Pakistan desperate to keep Champions Trophy Rights?

Symbol of International Credibility: Pakistan is desperate to keep hold of its rights. Hosting the tournament would solidify Pakistan's standing as a reliable and secure destination for international cricket after years of isolation due to security issues.

Pakistan has made great strides in bringing international cricket back to its shores, hosting teams like Australia, England, and New Zealand recently. Successfully hosting a marquee ICC event like the Champions Trophy would be a definitive endorsement of Pakistan and a return to the cricketing map.

Economic and Cultural Impact: Major sporting events bring significant economic benefits, including tourism and sponsorship revenues. For a cricket-obsessed nation like Pakistan, hosting the Champions Trophy is also kind of a challenge for them, which they wouldn't like to sacrifice to India.

Also, a country that has been ravaged with various internal issues, the Pakistani hierarchy sees it as a trophy, and if they can reserve their right to host the tournament solo, that will definitely be celebrated in their country, even if Mohammad Rizwan and co get eliminated from the group stages.

India's Stance and the Reason for Roadblock

The strained diplomatic relations between India and Pakistan have long impacted their cricketing ties. India has not toured Pakistan since 2008, and the two teams only meet in ICC and ACC events at neutral venues. Although Pakistan came to India for a bilateral series in 2012 and came for the T20 World Cup 2016 as well.

Security Concerns: The safety of players and fans is a paramount concern for the BCCI. Despite Pakistan's efforts to ensure security, the Indian board remains apprehensive about the risks involved. And to be honest, they are spot on.

And the way Pakistan's government has kept on supporting violence, India holds all the rights to keep its stance firm. Also, the continuous circus at PCB coupled with wayward, provocative words, Pakistan have paved their own downfall. Furthermore, a recent upheaval in Pakistan has pertained to India's worries about travelling to the country.

Does Pakistan deserve a Chance to host an ICC Event?

Pakistan's hopes depend on several factors. The ICC has been supportive of Pakistan hosting the Champions Trophy, but it must balance this with ensuring all participating teams' safety and satisfaction.

Pakistan's Political Drama Continues

Amid the ongoing saga, the recent political unrest in the country has further jeopardized their chances of hosting such a grand event. The visuals and recent nuisance in the country will rebuff ICC and other cricket boards from participation citing security reasons. The major political issues in their own country may peril their chances of hosting the tournament, further solidifying the questions of their hosting rights.

PCB's Stupid Flamboyance

Another significant moment of Pakistan's stupid flamboyance was when they decided to have a trophy tour at the disputed Kashmir region. The move was vehemently protested by India and ICC revoked Pakistan's imprudent act by cancelling the trophy tour in those regions.

A Hybrid model may be adopted, or the tournament may completely shift away from Pakistan. And if PCB thought travelling to India for the World Cup 2023 meant they got a freebie from India, they must realize how blatantly wrong and naive they are.

For now, the Champions Trophy remains a contested prize, not just on the field, but off it as well - as predicted, India is leading the race and Pakistan is digging their own grave.
